Is UCLA legit? We’ll get a better answer after Saturday’s game

Saturday’s game against Oregon isn’t just a chance for the UCLA Bruins to stay unbeaten in the 2026 season, a win over the Ducks could put the rest of the Big Ten Conference on notice about Bob Chesney’s capabilities.UCLA football had expectations for themselves heading into the 2026 season but the consensus around the Big Ten and the rest of the NCAA is that it’d take time for Chesney to build up the Bruin program. That might not be the case, as UCLA is already ranked and could challenge for a spot in the College Football Playoffs with a win over the Ducks.USA TODAY’s Jordan Mendoza wrote about just how legit the 2026 UCLA team is, ahead of the Bruins battle with Oregon this weekend.“Not only has this suddenly become an important Big Ten game, it’s also the first major test for Chesney’s Bruins. A win would officially thrust UCLA into the national conversation and further cement one of college football’s most remarkable turnarounds of 2026,” Mendoza wrote. “With UCLA’s blazing start, you’d think the Bruins were responsible for the scorching temperatures in Tinseltown. The 4-0 record has been fueled by a dominant rushing attack averaging 281.5 yards per game, fourth-best in the FBS, while leading the nation at 6.95 yards per carry. The ground game is spearheaded by touchdown machine Wayne Knight. Defensively, the Bruins have been just as disruptive, forcing 12 turnovers and posting a plus-8 turnover margin, tied for the third-best mark in the country.”UCLA will face a backup quarterback this weekend but that backup is plenty capable. Dylan Raiola had moments of greatness at Nebraska and has had two full weeks to prepare to start against the opportunistic Bruin defense.Things have already changed dramatically for UCLA football season, a win on Saturday would only amplify the movement. This article originally appeared on UCLA Wire: Is UCLA legit?
