The Atlanta Braves entered June with one of the league’s most potent offenses, but their production cratered in the month, making June the worst for their offense after a run of strong performances earlier in the season. Injuries and regression to form played a role, but the biggest issue was several key hitters simply failing to deliver. The team has battled a long-standing problem at shortstop, and while Ha-Seong Kim appeared to offer a solution, that plan hasn’t panned out. Jorge Mateo has shown flashes but has struggled recently, while Jim Jarvis has been raking in the minors at .313/.406/.461 in Triple-A and has been recalled after an earlier cup-of-coffee call-up. The Cardinals will hand the ball to Dustin May tonight. May followed an impressive one-hit, complete-game shutout with a rough follow-up in which he allowed two home runs and six earned runs in only two innings. Teammates with the most success against May include Mike Yastrzemski, who has a .500 average and 1.206 OPS in 14 at-bats against him, and Austin Riley, who has two home runs in five at-bats, plus Dominic Smith, who has a homer in three at-bats. Outside of these matchups, most Braves hitters have struggled, as no other starter has an OPS above .400 against May, though many Braves batters have limited exposure to him (no more than eight at-bats apiece). On the mound for Atlanta, Hurston Waldrep will make his major-league start, and because most Cardinals hitters haven’t faced him yet, it’s an opportunity for Waldrep to showcase his upside as a young pitcher; he was hitting 99 mph before his recent injury, and a strong outing could boost the Braves’ optimism for the future. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Eastern.
