​Former Kentucky star and longtime NBA guard John Wall recently opened up about his deep connection to the University of Kentucky during an appearance on The Assist with Kyle Tucker, hosted by 247Sports’ Kyle Tucker. In his current role as President of Basketball Operations, Wall reflected on how Kentucky shaped his life and career, while expressing his enduring appreciation for former Kentucky head coach John Calipari and the university itself.
“I’m always going to support (John) Cal(ipari) because he’s the coach who gave me the opportunity to go to college and live out one of my dreams. But it was the University of Kentucky that let me put on the jersey, that gave me the chance to play on ABC every Saturday, on CBS, ESPN, and in those major games. So I’ll always try to give back and show my support,” Wall explained. He recalled fond memories of reconnecting with the program, emphasizing how significant those moments were to him.
“If you’ve seen this past year before it started, I went back and surprised them at Midnight Madness, and Mark Pope saw me out there and asked, ‘What is John Wall doing here?’ and the crowd went crazy. So, I’ll always carry that love and support for Kentucky, their fan base, and the opportunity to try to give back in any way I can,” Wall added.
Wall’s Kentucky tenure peaked during the 2009-10 season, when he led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight and earned SEC Player of the Year honors. His explosive performance that season solidified Kentucky’s role in his basketball journey, earning him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.
