TJ Friedl’s fall from grace with the Cincinnati Reds has been well documented, from a near-4 WAR contributor who earned limited MVP votes not long ago to a player optioned to Triple-A on the doorstep of his 31st birthday. With declining metrics, rising age, and a higher salary, many wondered if Friedl would ever again be part of Cincinnati’s roster. Reds fans weighed in, largely predicting his exit, as Blake Dunn had essentially overtaken him in center field and leadoff duties, and the club had built depth in outfield that made Friedl seem expendable.
Yet the Baseball Gods had other plans. A significant elbow sprain to Dunn forced a call-up, and Friedl returned to the big leagues to reclaim his spot. The Reds announced that Friedl was recalled from Triple-A Louisville, while Dunn was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 27. In Louisville, Friedl had shown he could still contribute, posting a .271/.370/.471 line with 13 runs driven in over 18 games and 81 plate appearances. While the hitting environment there can inflate numbers, the results suggested he still had something to offer.
Now Friedl is back in the lineup, immediately slotted into center field for the series finale against the Pirates. It’s a chance at a redemption tour for a player who has spent years trying to prove he belongs and a test for a Reds team that remains hopeful but running out of time to determine if he fits into its long-term plans beyond 2026. With a $3.8 million arbitration salary on the horizon, Friedl’s path to a sustained role with Cincinnati hinges on showing he can perform at the big league level again. In many ways, his current arc mirrors that of the Reds themselves—still afloat, but pressed to prove they can turn the corner and stay in the fight. Here’s hoping both sides find the spark they need.
