(Photo by Michael Hickey/Getty Images for ONIT) | Getty Images for ONIT I’m starting to sense a pattern in the types of quarterbacks Bret Bielema recruits. Just looking at his time in Champaign, Bielema’s two most successful QBs have been Luke Altmyer and Tommy DeVito. Altmyer started at Ole Miss, and DeVito at Syracuse. So it’s no surprise that Bielema went out and added a veteran this off-season. Katin Houser is going to be the newest in the long line of Bielema transfer quarterbacks. The lineage started back at Wisconsin when Bielema picked up an eventual Super Bowl Champion from North Carolina State. “The first transfer quarterback I ever had was Russell Wilson,” Bielema said. Wilson, who was not a household name at the time, thrived under Bielema. Standing at only 5’11”, Russ didn’t necessarily fit the mold of a star quarterback; however, that wasn’t a problem for Bielema. “Not a real tall dude, but a real big heart,” Bielema said. Going into his sixth year as Illinois’ head coach, Bielema understands you can’t always judge a book by its cover. “Don’t put them in a cookie cutter,” Bielema said in reference to recruiting quarterbacks. Houser definitely doesn’t fit the mold of your standard Big Ten starting QB. The fifth-year senior went across the country before eventually landing in Champaign. After playing high school ball in California, Houser took his talents to Michigan State, where he received limited playing time. He then hit the portal and balled out at Eastern Carolina. For the two-time transfer, picking his final college wasn’t difficult, and the people within the program sold it for him. “It’s a winning culture,” Houser said.Houser plans on continuing that winning culture this season. “I’m a very competitive guy – I hate losing,” Houser said. “I wanna go win.”The ECU transfer certainly has the blueprint for success this year. His predecessors, Altmyer and DeVito, oversaw the best stretch of Illini football in recent memory. The pair oversaw three bowl appearances, with Altmeyer winning the final two, as well as achieving back-to-back nine-plus-win seasons. With all of the success Bielema has had with transfer quarterbacks, it’s hard not to be excited about Houser this season. Combined with the fact that Houser is coming off a breakout year at ECU, the 2026 season could be a special one for the Illini. “We’ve put in so much work. From January to Spring ball to Fall camp,” Houser said. With under 40 days remaining until the first kickoff at Gies Memorial Stadium, that hard work is almost finished, and Houser will have his chance to shine under the bright lights.
