Kings Hand Acuff Jr. Biggest Summer League Test Vs. Clippers

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

Darius Acuff Jr. has already proven himself with a strong start, but Sacramento Kings fans know the real test lies ahead. After turning heads with a standout showing at the California Classic, the Kings’ blue-chip guard is headed to Las Vegas to compete in the NBA 2K26 Summer League. The Sacramento contingent will kick off their Las Vegas schedule on Thursday night in a marquee clash against the Los Angeles Clippers, setting the tone for a tournament that could amplify Acuff’s mark as the centerpiece of Sacramento’s 2026 draft class.
The Summer League games in Las Vegas are nationally televised, giving Acuff another platform to demonstrate why the Kings were confident enough to place the spotlight on him in the 2026 draft. The California Classic served as a revealing preview, highlighting Acuff’s high ceiling while also exposing areas that still need refinement. Across two California Classic appearances, he averaged an impressive 23.5 points and 3.5 assists, helping Sacramento race to an undefeated 3-0 record. Yet behind the stat line, the path to those performances included its share of early bumps.
Acuff learned quickly just how fast and physical the NBA game can be. In his pro debut against the Brooklyn Nets, the pace and pressure were palpable. He started slowly, finishing the opening period 1-for-8 and 9-for-29 for the game, often facing aggressive traps and multiple defenders off screens. Rather than forcing the issue in the late stretch, he delivered one of the game’s most consequential plays by finding Nique Clifford for the game-winning three. “I was getting rushed a little bit, something I don’t normally do,” Acuff admitted afterward. “I think I was just moving too fast. Nobody was making me move that fast.”
By the final California Classic game against Milwaukee, Acuff looked much more settled. He posted 22 points and three assists on 7-for-19 shooting, and he iced the win with a clutch step-back three in the closing seconds. The improvement wasn’t just about scoring; Sacramento coaches and players were encouraged by his competitive approach on the defensive end. Summer League head coach Chris Darnell praised Acuff’s demeanor, describing him as a “winning player” who embraces the challenge on defense and remains highly coachable. That attitude, paired with his offensive upside, is what makes Acuff such a compelling centerpiece for the Kings.
Las Vegas isn’t just about Acuff. Sacramento will bring a handful of familiar faces to the Summer League, giving the team a chance to build chemistry quickly. Second-year forward Nique Clifford returns after averaging 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds during the California Classic, providing another reliable scoring option and veteran presence. Emanuel Sharp, the second-round rookie, continues to showcase a two-way skill set that could translate well into the NBA. In the back line, defensive center Dylan Cardwell is expected to remain in the rotation as the team evaluates its frontcourt depth. Reigning All-Rookie Second Team selection Maxime Raynaud is anticipated to join the squad after finishing international duties with France, adding more versatility to the lineup. The contingent also welcomes the potential return of first-round pick Alex Karaban, who will be re-evaluated after missing the California Classic with an ankle injury.
For Acuff, the Las Vegas Summer League represents not only another chance to demonstrate his capabilities but also an opportunity to solidify his role within the Kings’ long-term plans. With every game on a national stage, he has the chance to further justify why Sacramento believed in him as a core piece of the organization’s 2026 draft class. The Summer League will challenge him in different ways—versus a broader array of NBA-bound talents, against top-tier coaching, and under heightened scrutiny—but it will also give him ample opportunities to showcase his growth, adaptability, and learning trajectory.
As the games in Las Vegas unfold, all eyes will be on Acuff as he tries to translate his California Classic success into sustained Summer League production. The expectations are high, both within the Kings organization and among their fan base, who have watched him rise from a promising prospect to a legitimate central figure in Sacramento’s future. If Acuff continues to apply the same work ethic, leadership, and competitive fire he displayed in his earlier appearances, he could solidify his standing as a cornerstone of the Kings’ present and a focal point of their evolving identity in the 2026 season and beyond. With a schedule that begins against a talented Clippers squad and features a slate of nationally televised games, Acuff has a prime platform to demonstrate that his early promise is more than potential—it’s a growing reality.
