Liverpool ‘disappointed’ by Edwards departure

By admin — In News — July 10, 2026

Fenway Sports Group President Mike Gordon expressed that the organization is naturally disappointed by Michael Edwards’ decision to step down from his role as CEO of Football. Edwards has spent more than 15 years at Liverpool, across two spells, contributing to both the club’s on-field successes and its strategic development during his tenure. Gordon highlighted Edwards’ exceptional contribution to Liverpool Football Club and Fenway Sports Group, noting that Edwards returned in 2024 at a crucial moment for the club and assumed a broader leadership role over Liverpool’s broader football interests. He emphasized that Edwards consistently demonstrated sound judgment, integrity, and an enduring commitment to building a robust, long-term football organization.
Gordon added that Edwards’ return coincided with a significant transition period for Liverpool, and his leadership helped the club navigate these changes while guiding them toward a historic milestone: securing the club’s 20th English league title. He attributed an important part of that success to Edwards’ impact, underscoring the positive influence he had during a pivotal era for the club. While acknowledging the natural disappointment of Edwards’ departure, Gordon stressed that Liverpool and Fenway Sports Group remain grateful for everything he has contributed to the organization over the years.
On behalf of John Henry, Tom Werner, and the entire Fenway Sports Group team, Gordon extended a formal thank you to Michael Edwards for his outstanding service, friendship, and leadership. He wished Edwards and his family continued success and happiness in all their future endeavors, recognizing the lasting legacy Edwards leaves behind at Liverpool and within the broader football portfolio under Fenway Sports Group. This message reflects respect for Edwards’ dedication and a wish for his continued achievements beyond his time with the club, while also signaling the ongoing commitment of Fenway Sports Group to strong governance and strategic excellence in football operations.
