Liverpool star features as Real Madrid manager identifies three targets to bolster midfield and defence

Real Madrid’s four signings this summer have signaled a reinvigorated push to reclaim European dominance, underscoring the club’s intent to field a stronger, more balanced squad next season. Yet the work is far from finished. Jose Mourinho is persistently urging the board to bolster the squad further, with particular emphasis on strengthening the defence and the midfield. It’s no secret that he is eyeing another centre-back and, while a new midfielder is also on the radar, that pursuit would likely hinge on significant departures to free up funds and space.
In this scenario, Mourinho has identified three players who could fit seamlessly into Real Madrid’s plans if additional reinforcements become necessary this summer. The first two targets for the back line are Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan and Tomas Araujo of Benfica. Bastoni, a left-footed centre-back, would bring balance and high-quality ball distribution to Madrid’s rear, though Inter have consistently stressed that they do not intend to part with one of their most integral players. Araujo offers versatility, capable of starring as a centre-back or right-back, and represents a younger, more attainable option who has impressed with Benfica in recent seasons.
For the midfield, Real Madrid’s preferred option is Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine World Cup winner would inject experience, control, and creativity into the midfield, matching the profile Mourinho has been seeking to enhance Madrid’s central playmaking and ball-progression capabilities. However, adding both a centre-back and a midfielder would require strategic cleansing of the squad, as there is currently only one remaining free roster slot. To complete both defensive and midfield reinforcements, at least one player would need to depart.
Madrid are reportedly prepared to consider parting with Eduardo Camavinga, although the French midfielder has shown a strong desire to stay and win Mourinho over during pre-season preparations. The club would not stand in the way of other potential exits either, including Gonzalo Garcia, and there is even a possibility of a loan move for Franco Mastantuono as part of the broader restructuring. Raul Asencio has also been put on the market as part of the wider squad reshuffle.
Until those potential exits are realized, the signing process will remain constrained by the number of free roster spots and the need to balance the wage bill and squad depth. Real Madrid’s leadership understands that to secure another defensive stalwart and a capable midfielder, some players may have to move on, creating room for fresh talents to integrate. The club’s plan remains to strengthen where it matters most—defence and midfield—so that the team can contend for major honours across domestic and European competitions in the coming season.
