Liverpool Target Barcola Progresses in World Cup at Isak’s Expense

Sweden fell short as they were eliminated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 32 by France in a 3-0 defeat at Boston Stadium in Foxborough on June 30, 2026. The Reds had previously explored a potential move for Bradley Barcola after losing Yan Diomande to PSG, and Barcola proved influential for France, finishing with the most touches in Sweden’s box (six) and scoring one of his country’s three goals. While Kylian Mbappé dominated headlines, Barcola remained highly active throughout the match, though both he and Aleksander Isak logged only one chance created each.
Isak did not have his best game and was substituted in the 89th minute after registering two shots, one on target. His impact was more pronounced defensively, highlighting how isolated he felt in attack alongside Viktor Gyökeres, with little meaningful link between the pair. Isak began the tournament strongly but Sweden’s challenge against the tournament favorites ended in disappointment as France advanced to face the Paraguayan side that upset the Netherlands. This result sets up France’s Round of 16 clash as they aim to continue their pursuit of the title.
