The Pride announced this morning through an official club press release that the WSL full-time star has joined London City Lionesses on a free transfer after departing FC Barcelona. The 31-year-old defender leaves Barcelona after a remarkable nine-year spell during which she helped the club collect a staggering 25 major trophies, including seven league titles and four UEFA Women’s Champions League triumphs. On the international stage, León has earned 62 Spain caps and has scored once for her country.
Commenting on her arrival, León said: “I’m excited and happy to be here. It’s an interesting and attractive project. I’ve seen what is being built and what is taking shape. I spent many years playing in Spain, and I feel now is the right moment to move given the project. The English league is helping women’s football grow. I wanted to test myself in another country, in another league, and experience a different style of football.”
She added: “What can I say about Michele [Kang]? It’s incredible what Michele conveys. She is an inspirational woman who wants women’s football to develop and thrive. Of course, I want to be part of something like this—a club that has been created for women. My teammates will help me settle into the new environment, and I hope my experience and leadership can assist the team this season. I’m looking forward to working with head coach Eder [Maestre], the staff, and my new teammates. Everyone has told me London is a cool city, and I’m going to love it. I’ll take it step by step. My aim is to adapt as quickly as possible to the team and the league, and from there to contribute my best as both a player and a person.”
Her ambition remains clear: to reach the highest levels as quickly as possible. She understands that a project develops in stages and requires hard work. León also spoke about maintaining a winning mentality and the determination to achieve new heights with London City Lionesses. “I want to keep winning and retain the drive to achieve more,” she stated. “Hopefully, we can do this together at London City Lionesses.”
León’s arrival marks the fifth signing of the summer transfer window for London City Lionesses, signaling the club’s commitment to strengthening the squad and advancing their ambitions in the Women’s Super League. With León’s vast experience at the pinnacle of European football and her international pedigree, she is expected to bring leadership, versatility, and a competitive edge to the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season. London City Lionesses are counting on her to help drive success on and off the pitch, contributing to the team’s evolution and helping them pursue top-flight achievements.
