LAS VEGAS — In their second Summer League matchup on the back-to-back, the Magic faced the Trail Blazers at Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus without second-year guards Jase Richardson and Noah Penda. Despite missing two rotation players, Orlando still found a way to come out on top in overtime, securing a 112-105 victory over Portland out West.
TyTy Washington Jr. and Philip Wheeler drew starting roles alongside Lester Quinones, with Magic two-way players Colin Castleton and Alex Morales, both former Osceola players from Orlando’s G League affiliate, rounding out the lineup. The absence of Richardson and Penda meant Orlando leaned on additional minutes from its depth as they battled back from a double-digit deficit to force overtime and claim their second consecutive Summer League win in Las Vegas.
Quinones produced a game-high 30 points, Castleton added 21, and Wheeler totaled 18 as the Magic pulled away in the extra period. The late-regulation drama included Keon Johnson’s clutch free throws for Portland to tie the game at 101 with 6.2 seconds left in regulation. Wheeler answered with a 3 from the top of the key to start overtime, followed by Morales drilling a triple from the right corner to extend the momentum.
Orlando trailed by as many as 15 in the first half but flipped the script, capturing its first lead at 64-62 with 2:51 left in the third quarter. The game stood 71-71 as the fourth quarter began, setting the stage for an overtime surge that saw the Magic outscore the Trail Blazers 11-4 and move to 2-1 in Las Vegas play.
Quinones also delivered a late-second-quarter buzzer-beater 3, then knocked down two more triples early in the fourth. Wheeler contributed an overtime 3 and even showcased a running slam dunk in the fourth, underscoring the versatility of Orlando’s guard depth.
Izaiyah Nelson, a second-round pick, came off the bench for a third straight Summer League appearance but left the game early due to an injury. He collided with Ty Ty Washington while attempting to block a layup by Portland’s Quincy Olivari around the seven-minute mark of the second quarter. Nelson later was diagnosed with a sprained left ankle and is listed as day-to-day moving forward.
For Portland, Jayson Kent led all scorers for the Trail Blazers with 20 points, followed by Chris Youngblood with 14 and Olivari contributing 13 off the bench. Portland shot a respectable 37% from three-point range (15 of 41), but Orlando was even more efficient from distance, connecting on 12 of 25 attempts (48%).
The coaching decision to rest Richardson and Penda was influenced by the back-to-back nature of the trip and Orlando’s desire to give additional players on the roster a chance to state their case for minutes in Las Vegas. Cam Reddish also sat out his third consecutive Summer League contest due to a right knee bone bruise. Portland was without 2025 No. 16 pick Yang Hansen because of an illness, according to the team.
In two Summer League outings thus far, Penda has averaged 17.5 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2.5 blocks across 28.7 minutes per game, a statistic that suggests his continued development remains on track for a potential larger role as the summer continues.
