Manchester United are edging closer to finalising a deal to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, driven by the midfielder’s £35million release clause, according to The Athletic. Tielemans, under contract with Villa until June 2028, has attracted strong interest from United, who are eager to bolster their midfield options this summer. Villa, who handed him fresh terms earlier in the year, have no desire to sell but face the reality of a clause that makes a sale more attainable, particularly given the current market dynamics and the mechanism involved.
United have identified Tielemans as a prime opportunity to reinforce a key area of the pitch, and despite rival interest, the 29-year-old midfielder is said to prefer a switch to Old Trafford. Contact between all parties continues as they work toward formalising the transfer, a development that has come somewhat as a surprise to some observers but would deliver a much-needed infusion of quality and experience in midfield, a line United have prioritised this summer.
This pursuit comes on the heels of United’s decision to pause a move for Atalanta’s Ederson, at least for now. A deal with Atalanta for Ederson had already been shaped, valued at €40.5million (roughly £35million) with potential add-ons of €4.5million (around £4million). Personal terms with the Brazil international had been agreed, and initial medical checks were completed before Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.
United remained active behind the scenes and were able to pivot swiftly after the tournament, continuing to run their checks and keep the option open should the opportunity present itself again later in the window. Whether Ederson or Atalanta would revisit the possibility remains unclear, but United’s strategic aim to strengthen Michael Carrick’s midfield goes beyond pursuing Tielemans, encompassing a broader plan that also includes the recent acquisition of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
Tielemans arrived at Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in the summer of 2023 and remains under contract for another two years. He has been a crucial contributor to Villa’s rise, playing a pivotal role in the club’s ascent to Champions League qualification and their Europa League success in the 2025-26 season. Across 35 appearances in all competitions, he registered two goals and seven assists, underscoring his impact in the engine room of Villa’s side.
The Athletic has reported that Unai Emery’s vision for Villa involves building a midfield trio around Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana. However, Onana’s season has been interrupted by a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered during Belgium’s World Cup victory over the United States, sidelining him for a significant period and complicating Emery’s plans. As the situation unfolds, United’s interest in Tielemans could represent a timely augmentation to Villa’s evolving midfield dynamic, while United assess the best path to strengthening their own squad amid the transfer window’s flux.
