Mariners Get the Last Laugh, Beat Rays 8-2

The Mariners have endured a rough stretch on this road trip, and the Florida heat may have taken a toll on the team as they prepare for the final game of the first half trailing in a five-game skid. The day began with an unsettling moment when Hancock took a line drive off his throwing hand from Jose Arnada on the very first pitch. He stayed in to finish the inning with a smile and a thumbs up, but the training staff and Wilson certainly did not share that confidence. In the bottom of the second, Hancock walked Victor Mesa Jr. and was immediately replaced by Jose Ferrar, who finished the inning without incident.
All eyes then shifted to an improvised bullpen day for a club already struggling to score and coming off a 6-1 blowout the day before. It would have been easy to tune out, but the game quickly offered a different narrative. In the top of the second, Josh Naylor opened with a single. Garver drew a walk, and Cole Young added a single, loading the bases for Victor Robles. For the Mariners, the usual “NOBLETIGER” moment might have been expected in this situation, yet today the play unfolded differently. Robles tapped a slow, sinking ball into the outfield, where a diving Mullens knocked it down, allowing Naylor to score from third and breaking up the potential offense early.
Despite the rough start, the Mariners displayed resilience and remained in the game longer than many would have anticipated. I found myself settling back onto the couch, ready for more action and acknowledging that while they might still falter, there was at least some offense to cheer. Cole Young then stole second as Weston Wilson fanned, and Buddy Kennedy walked, setting the table for J.P. Crawford with two outs and the bases loaded again. Crawford delivered with an inside-out swing into left field for a two-run double, boosting Seattle’s lead to 3-0 in the second.
The momentum continued as the Mariners refused to fade. Weston Wilson connected for his second homer of the season, sending the ball to left field and widening the cushion to four runs. Kennedy reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Crawford, creating a two-man scenario on base for Randy Arozarena. Seizing the moment, Arozarena launched a three-run homer to right, stretching the Mariners’ advantage and further extending the lead.
From that point, Seattle never relinquished control. Jonathan Arnada added a note of offense in the eighth inning with a solo shot off Bazzardo, breaking the shutout. The Mariners immediately answered in the bottom of the inning when J.P. Crawford lined a double to right, driving in Buddy Kennedy and padding the lead further. By the time the eighth inning concluded, Seattle stood firmly in command, and the scoreboard reflected a game that had turned in their favor after a rocky start. The final stretch of the game showcased a team determined to finish the first half on a high note, with timely hitting, productive runs, and continued bullpen support cementing a convincing win.
