Roundtable Sports reporter Brandon Liguori recaps the Marlins’ 8-2 win over the Pirates on Wednesday at loanDepot park.MIAMI — Right-hander Janson Junk worked six strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned, Griffin Conine took former Marlins reliever Lake Bachar deep for his 13th home run of the season, and the Miami Marlins secured their second series in a row with an 8-2 win Wednesday over the Pittsburgh Pirates (58-64) at loanDepot park.Miami is now 62-59, inching closer to the final National League Wild Card spot, with the club just 1 1/2 games behind.Conine’s home run came an inning after the Marlins put up a four spot in the third inning, chasing Pirates starter Carmen Mlodzinski out of the contest after 2 1/3 innings.Conine has hit 10 home runs in his last 28 games since July 9, ranking third in MLB during that span, according to the Marlins.His latest home run continues what has been an impressive stretch at the plate. Since July 9, the outfielder/first baseman has provided a significant boost to a Marlins lineup that has helped the club remain in the National League Wild Card race.Pittsburgh scored first Wednesday, getting its first run in the second inning on an error by shortstop Otto Lopez, whose throw to first landed in the Pirates dugout.That lead, however, quickly evaporated. Miami would even the game in the bottom half, as second baseman Xavier Edwards reached on an infield single to first with the bases loaded and two outs, scoring Jakob Marsee.Later in the game, Marsee made an incredible catch in deep center field, robbing Esmerlyn Valdez of a two-run home run in the fourth inning.Agustín Ramírez also provided a boost for the Marlins’ offense, collecting two hits and driving in a run. His production helped Miami keep the pressure on Pittsburgh throughout the game as the Marlins continued to build their lead.The Marlins continued to add to their lead in the middle innings, giving Junk plenty of room to work with as he kept the Pirates’ offense in check. Junk settled in after allowing Pittsburgh to score its first run, limiting the damage and giving Miami a quality start.Miami’s offense continued to put pressure on Pittsburgh pitching, taking advantage of opportunities with runners on base and keeping the Pirates from finding a way back into the game.The Marlins will turn to right-hander Tyler Phillips (3-5, 3.47 ERA) on Thursday at 1:10 p.m. ET as the club seeks a sweep before beginning a six-game road trip that could have a significant impact on its playoff fate.
