Maverick Vinales says KTM situation mirrors Yamaha ordeal: ‘Teams push me to the limit’

Maverick Vinales has drawn a direct comparison between the contract turmoil he’s currently experiencing with KTM and the fracturing of his previous relationship with Yamaha, suggesting that MotoGP teams have repeatedly pushed him to the edge. The 10-time grand prix winner has been outspoken about his frustration with how KTM has handled his contract situation, publicly placing the responsibility on the Austrian manufacturer for jeopardizing his prospects in MotoGP.
Ahead of this weekend’s German Grand Prix, Vinales explained that he had agreed to a contract extension for 2027, only to be told that the deal was no longer valid. After Friday practice at the Sachsenring, the Spaniard said the latest episode had rekindled memories of the turbulent split with Yamaha in 2021. He was released by Yamaha mid-season that year after allegedly attempting to damage his bike’s engine at the Styrian Grand Prix, and he had already agreed to depart the team a year before his contract expired, prior to the infamous Red Bull Ring incident.
“What I said on Thursday is basically the truth of the situation and what happened,” he stated. “So this is the truth and I don’t want to hide the truth because it is the same as it happened at Yamaha. A lot of people start to say that I have mental problems. No, I don’t have anything. The problem is the teams that push me to the absolute limit with the things, with the decisions. They know very well that if I feel that the team is giving the maximum for me, I will give a thousand percent for the team. But as soon as you put me on the side, for me, this is gone. I need to feel that I am valued for the project and for the team. That’s why I always said that I’m really happy with the engineers because they give me the value I need. As I said, I signed a contract that was really bad for my confidence, even for the future. To make decisions or different decisions was very bad. But I trust in the engineers. I trust in the project.”
KTM has stressed that its priority is to wait until Vinales has recovered from a shoulder injury before judging his true performance level in MotoGP. The brand’s motorsport chief Pit Beirer appeared on television during Friday practice at Sachsenring, emphasizing that negotiations paused only after he learned the available seat was with the satellite squad rather than the factory team. Beirer also left the door open for Vinales to continue with KTM’s satellite squad next year, contingent on his recovery.
Yet Vinales made clear that he does not expect to be on the grid next year and said his immediate focus is to return to full fitness and regain his form after the summer break. “I don’t know if it’s still an open door or not. This, we will see,” he commented. “But from my point of view, it’s hard to say something. After all that happened, it’s hard to fit. For me, the situation is complicated. I’m not sure what the future holds.” He added that the ongoing uncertainty has only amplified the importance of getting back to peak fitness and recapturing the speed that defined his career.
The episode has underscored a pattern, according to Vinales, in which teams push a rider toward the edge, only to pull back or pivot when circumstances change. He reflected on the sense of being undervalued and hinted that the broader issue lies in how teams manage relationships with riders, especially when contract negotiations and performance considerations intersect. While he praised the engineers and the technical side of KTM, he suggested that the business decisions around his future have created a destabilizing environment that has affected his confidence.
As the season resumes after the break, Vinales’s priority remains clear: return to full fitness, rediscover his pace, and navigate the uncertain terrain of his contract future with the same determination that has characterized his long career. He remains explicit that his stability as a rider depends on feeling valued and supported within a project, a factor he believes is essential for delivering maximum performance. Whether KTM can honor that alignment and prove the durability of their commitment will play a critical role in determining his path for the remainder of this season and the next.
