Meek Mill has made it clear that he’s pleased about Jaylen Brown being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. On Friday, July 3, soon after reports confirmed the Boston Celtics had agreed to move Brown, the rapper took to X to welcome the four-time All-Star to Philadelphia. In his post, Meek wrote, “It was meant for me and Jaylen Brown to meet up one day no better place then Philly lfg.”
The message appeared just hours after ESPN’s Shams Charania detailed the deal, one of the biggest NBA offseason trades, in which Boston sent Brown to the 76ers in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks. Charania noted that the Celtics would also receive Philadelphia’s unprotected 2031 first-round pick, and that a 2028 first-round selection could convert into a pick swap depending on where the picks land.
Brown will arrive in Philadelphia after spending the first decade of his NBA career with the Celtics, where he established himself as one of the league’s premier two-way players and helped lead Boston to several deep playoff runs. Last season, with Jayson Tatum sidelined for a large portion of the year while recovering from a torn Achilles, Brown stepped up as Boston’s primary scoring option, posting career-best averages of 28.7 points per game and 5.1 assists. Despite widespread speculation about his future, Brown did not request a trade.
According to Charania, Brown never asked out of Boston during the process. Now, he joins a 76ers core anchored by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, creating one of the Eastern Conference’s most talented trios. Interestingly, the trade brings Brown to a player he had previously spoken about critically. After Boston’s playoff exit at the hands of Philadelphia earlier in the year, Brown had criticized Embiid for his tendency to embellish contact, describing the seven-foot standout as “flopping around.” A day later, however, Brown praised Embiid on a Twitch stream, calling him “one of the best bigs in basketball history” while acknowledging that Embiid often sells contact.
