Michigan regents don’t address Warde Manuel’s future or athletics probe

   ​Traverse City — The University of Michigan Board of Regents met Thursday, but didn’t discuss the $12 million investigation into the culture of the scandal-ridden Athletics Department or the future of Athletic Director Warde Manuel.After the meeting, the board went on a “private retreat” where no reporters were allowed. “Nothing related to the athletics investigation or Warde Manuel’s future is taking place” during the retreat, said Paul Corliss, Michigan’s assistant vice president for Public Affairs and Internal Communications.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementInstead, University of Michigan Board Chair Michael Behm told The Detroit News on Thursday that while there was no extensive report on the Jenner & Block investigation into the university’s athletic department to release, the university planned to disseminate the law firm’s recommendations to the public.Behm said the university is concerned with how to protect the identities of those who spoke to the investigators and that readers might be able to determine who was being referenced even if names were withheld.Corliss told The News earlier in the week that, to his knowledge, no physical investigative report existed, and there were no plans to discuss Manuel or the investigation at the Thursday board meeting.The Detroit News has requested the correspondence between the Jenner & Block law firm and the board over this investigation. When asked by text Monday morning whether he is staying, Manuel told The News, “Yes, I am.” Manuel declined to talk when approached Thursday by a Detroit News reporter.Manuel told Yahoo! Sports reporter Ross Dellenger via text on Monday, “The president and I have had several great conversations over the past couple of days. There are no plans for me not to continue to be the athletic director for the near future.” Manuel was referring to UM President Domenico Grasso.The 58-year-old athletic director’s comments came after national outlets, including ESPN and Yahoo! Sports, reported that a decision on his future could be discussed as part of the review of a broader investigation into the Michigan Athletic Department’s culture.
