Exeter High School graduate Deven Sheerin was selected in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball Draft, going 128th overall to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday in the event held in Philadelphia. The LSU right-handed pitcher from Louisiana State University was the third Tiger chosen that day, joining outfielder Derek Curiel, taken in the first round at No. 5 by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and outfielder Jake Brown selected in the second round at No. 65 by the Seattle Mariners.
“Deven has all the potential in the world, and the competitiveness to match it,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said in a statement released by the school. “He looks like an MLB reliever standing on the mound right now. As he develops his game mentally and physically, I believe you will see him on an MLB mound. Deven has come a long way as a player and a person during his time at LSU.”
Sheerin, who received a medical redshirt in 2025 after transferring to LSU from Mount St. Mary’s, established himself as LSU’s top reliever in 2026. He finished the season with a 3-2 record and a 4.78 ERA across 20 appearances, recording five saves, 18 walks, and 58 strikeouts in 37.2 innings pitched. Notably, he earned his fifth save of the season in LSU’s SEC Tournament victory over Oklahoma on May 19, working 3.1 shutout innings while allowing just one hit, issuing no walks, and recording six strikeouts.
In another standout performance, Sheerin tied a personal best with nine strikeouts in a game against Texas A&M on April 19, limiting the Aggies to one run on three hits with no walks over 4.1 innings. Off the field, Sheerin was recognized for his academic accomplishments as well, earning a spot on the 2025 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll while majoring in sport administration.
