MLB insider reveals what position the Astros reportedly “desperately” need at the trade deadline, originally published by The Sporting News. The Sporting News is listed as a preferred source by clicking here.
Following a rough start to the season, the Houston Astros were not viewed as active buyers at the trade deadline. At one point, names like Yordan Alvarez, Josh Hader, and even Hunter Brown were floated as potential trade chips. However, Houston has since steadied itself and now stands with a real chance to make the postseason. They’re currently just 0.5 games back of the American League Wild Card, and that proximity makes the idea of the Astros acquiring a veteran addition at the deadline far from far-fetched.
USA Today’s MLB insider Bob Nightengale reports that the Astros “desperately” want to add one specific position at this year’s trade deadline in light of their recent resurgence: a starting pitcher. Nightengale notes, “The Astros, who have gone 26-19 since May 21, desperately want another starter. Their rotation is yielding a 5.29 ERA, second-worst in MLB.” With their playoff hopes rekindled and the Wild Card race tightening, a midseason acquisition would not be surprising.
One area of need that has already been identified is a left-handed hitting outfielder, and names like Colorado Rockies outfielders Mickey Moniak and Jake McCarthy have emerged as logical trade targets. Beyond the outfield, upgrading the rotation remains a priority. Tatsuya Imai has shown inconsistency, and the Astros cannot rely on Spencer Arrighetti, Peter Lambert, Cristian Javier, and other internal options behind Hunter Brown this season.
Fortunately, there should be ample starting pitching available on the market this summer. Possibilities include Freddy Peralta, Robbie Ray, and potentially Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Eduardo Rodriguez, Trevor Rogers, and Michael Wacha. While the Astros “desperately” need to bolster their rotation, this appears to be a strong year to pursue another starting pitcher in a trade. Dana Brown and the Astros’ front office are likely targeting both a left-handed hitting outfielder and a starting pitcher as they approach the August 3 trade deadline.
Beneath the Astros’ ongoing pursuit, there are other notable trade discussions in the league, including a Cubs–Mariners hypothetical deal involving Seiya Suzuki for Luis Castillo, and Philadelphia’s consideration of Jung Hoo Lee and Robbie Ray from the Giants in exchange for two prospects. As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Houston to see whether they can gain ground in the AL West and solidify their postseason chances with targeted upgrades.
