Major League Baseball and the Philadelphia Phillies kicked off All-Star weekend with the unveiling of a newly renovated youth baseball field at FDR Park, marking a broad commitment to investing in local communities as Philadelphia prepares to host the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. The Ashburn Field has been upgraded with a synthetic turf surface, replacing its former grass and dirt layout, which was often rendered unusable by flooding and rain.
“What better way to kick off All-Star weekend than by investing in our young people?” Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson remarked during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event also drew attention as part of a larger effort to support youth sports in the city ahead of the 2026 all-star festivities.
Phillies officials emphasized that the renovation continues a long-standing partnership with MLB, extending a commitment that began about three decades ago. The updated field is expected to support a significantly higher volume of baseball and softball activities each year. Rob Holiday, the Phillies’ director of youth baseball, noted, “Thirty years after the initial support to build Ashburn Field, MLB has now provided the kids of our city with a state-of-the-art turf field.” He added that the facility previously hosted roughly 125 events annually but lost about 30 percent of those events due to wet weather, underscoring the practical impact of the upgrade.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured the Phillie Phanatic cutting the ceremonial ribbon and was followed by the opening games of the All-Star Commissioner’s Cup. The Cup brings together elite youth baseball teams from across the country, including participants from the Phillies Urban Youth Academy. Mark Solomon, whose son represents the Phillies Urban Youth Academy, described the experience as exceptional for the young players. “It’s such a unique thing. The kids are treated like big league ballplayers,” he said, noting that the teams are engaged in events that extend beyond the opening games. “We don’t see them for the next several days,” he added with a smile.
Participants in the Commissioner’s Cup will attend several marquee All-Star weekend events, including the Swingman Classic, the Futures Game, and the Home Run Derby before heading home on Tuesday. Justin Chasmar, the Phillies’ coordinator of youth baseball and softball development, explained the schedule: “They’ll play all these games, then go across the street tonight for the Swingman Classic. Sunday they’ll go to the Futures Game. Monday they’ll go to the Home Run Derby, then they’ll fly home Tuesday morning.” He also stressed that the investment goes beyond a better playing surface. “Pouring into youth baseball and softball… this is our next generation of fans,” Chasmar said. “Being able to provide something like this gives kids another place to come play on a really nice surface.”
The Ashburn Field renovation is part of a larger initiative to enhance youth sports infrastructure in Philadelphia as the city prepares for the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. The 2026 All-Star Game is set to be played Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, with fans invited to participate in All-Star Village at the Pennsylvania Convention Center throughout the weekend. The weekend’s schedule includes a range of youth and professional events designed to spotlight both the city’s rich baseball history and its ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of players and fans. The All-Star festivities promise to draw visitors from across the country, contributing to the local economy and reinforcing Philadelphia’s role as a hub for major league baseball and community investment.
