NBA free agency winners and losers from wild offseason shakeup

For the most part, the major players in the NBA have already found their new homes, and the offseason is shaping up with fewer dramatic moves than expected. Yet the free agency cycle continues to reshape power dynamics in the league, leaving one notable exception still unsettled. LeBron James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and widely regarded as the top player of this generation, has not yet finalized his next destination after informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he would become an unrestricted free agent, opting to move on from the franchise after eight seasons. The team he chooses next will undoubtedly generate widespread intrigue, but with the dust settling from the first week of free agency, it’s worth taking stock of early winners and losers of the NBA offseason.
As this exercise unfolds, the guiding question is whether teams have improved their status as championship contenders. Are they closer now to competing for a title than they were a month ago? For the Miami Heat, the answer appears to be a clear yes. When Giannis Antetokounmpo is healthy, he remains one of the five best players on the planet. Adding Bobby Portis provides another quietly impactful dimension to the roster. Miami has reestablished itself as a desirable destination, rekindling the sense that they can field a serious contender. The roster still needs to be rounded out, but the Heat are in play for LeBron James; signing him would elevate Miami into a formidable threat in the Eastern Conference.
Securing Jaylen Brown on the affordable side of the market represents a significant win for Philadelphia. With Joel Embiid now 32 and not always available, introducing another star in his prime—Brown is 29—immediately strengthens the 76ers. Brown should fit seamlessly alongside two-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey, Embiid, and the emerging talent in the rotation. The Sixers now boast a versatile array of scoring threats across the floor. In addition, Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons provide shooting and spacing on the wings, complementing the core. If Embiid can stay mostly healthy, Philadelphia could pose a serious challenge to the Knicks for conference supremacy in 2027. And if LeBron James ultimately joins, the 76ers could become a dominant force next season.
Credit should also be given to Toronto for recognizing that its current roster was strong but not elite and for understanding the need for a lead scorer. Kawhi Leonard embodies that role—he remains an elite defender and a perfect fit for the Raptors’ style—while adding the scoring punch to complement Scottie Barnes and the developing core. Toronto’s defense ranked among the league’s best last season (defensive rating around 112.1), and Leonard’s presence will amplify those efforts. The Raptors’ alignment of star talent with a strong defensive identity could position them as a formidable challenger in the Eastern Conference, even as the landscape continues to evolve.
