Nebraska shortstop signs free agent deal with the New York Mets

   ​A star Nebraska shortstop signed a free-agent deal following the conclusion of the 2026 MLB Draft on Monday. Dylan Carey signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Mets.Carey is the third Husker to be picked up by a Major League Baseball organization. Ty Horn and Carson Jasa were selected in the third round of the draft. Horn was selected 94th overall by the Cincinnati Reds, and Jasa was selected 98th overall by the Chicago Cubs.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementCarey earned numerous awards in his senior season at Nebraska. He won the Brooks Wallace Award, earned All-America recognition, received first-team honors by College Baseball Foundation, was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten. On the season, Carey batted .353 with 85 hits, 16 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 65 RBIs and 53 runs scored.The Castle Rock, Colorado, native concluded his collegiate career by becoming Nebraska’s all-time leader in career doubles (63) and was the ninth Husker in program history to reach 200 career hits, 150 runs and 150 RBIs.
