New York Yankees Quietly Promote 6-foot-7 Pitcher In Organization Amid Rays Series

Ahead of Game 3 of their four-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, the New York Yankees announced a notable promotion: highly regarded pitching prospect Henry Lalane has been moved up to High-A Hudson Valley from Single-A Tampa. MiLB.com confirmed the move with the note: “LHP Henry Lalane assigned to Hudson Valley Renegades from Tampa Tarpons.” Lalane, ranked the Yankees’ No. 5 prospect by Baseball America, is a 6-foot-7, 22-year-old left-handed starting pitcher who stands out even in an organization that already features a towering figure like Aaron Judge.
Lalane signed a minor-league deal with New York on May 4, 2021, out of the Dominican Republic, receiving a signing bonus of $350,000. Although born in the Bronx, Lalane moved to the Dominican Republic as a child. His development path has been gradual. He finally reached Single-A in 2024, but that season was hampered by a shoulder issue that required offseason surgery, limiting him to just 12 1/3 innings across Single-A and the Complex League.
In 2025, Lalane appeared in 16 1/3 innings at the Single-A level, posting a 1.65 ERA while fanning batters at a 27.4% rate and walking 17.8% of the hitters he faced. This year, he has continued to improve, trimming his walk rate to 8.9% in Single-A and boosting his strikeout rate to an impressive 32.8% over 62 1/3 innings. He recorded a 2.74 ERA and a 2.58 FIP at Single-A before his promotion to Hudson Valley. MLB Pipeline notes that Lalane’s fastball can reach up to 97 mph, though it typically sits in the low-90s. He complements this heater with a low-80s changeup that has depth and a mid-70s slurve.
At just 22 years old, Lalane still has considerable time to develop into a major league contributor, even if his progress through the minors has been slower than some anticipated. Pipeline lists Lalane as New York’s No. 14 prospect and projects that he could reach the majors in 2028.
The Yankees entered the season with a strong roster on paper, boasting the best run differential in the American League by a wide margin at +80. The Rays sit second in that metric with a +33 differential. Despite the Yankees’ depth and high expectations, Tampa Bay has managed to win more games early in the season, and the Rays currently hold a two-game lead in the AL East, with New York still widely regarded as having the talent to run down the division.
To reclaim the top spot, the Yankees need to reverse course quickly. If they drop the next two games against the Rays, they would fall six games back in the division; conversely, if New York wins the next two, they would close to within two games of Tampa Bay.
Game 3 of the four-game set at Tropicana Field is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. EDT on Wednesday. It features a compelling pitching matchup: right-hander Gerrit Cole (3-3, 4.01 ERA, 41 strikeouts, 42 2/3 innings) will start for the Yankees, and left-hander Shane McClanahan (7-5, 3.05 ERA, 77 strikeouts, 79 2/3 innings) will start for the Rays. This left-hander on the mound scenario adds another layer of intrigue for what promises to be a tightly contested contest.
