Robert Coles has surged into a commanding three-shot lead heading into the final round of the OFX Irish Legends, following another superb performance at Carton House. He carded a seven-under-par 65 for the second straight day, seizing control of the championship as the weekend approaches. The Englishman sits at 14-under-par after catching up with overnight leader Emanuele Canonica and producing one of the most impressive finishes of the week.
Four consecutive birdies over his last four holes transformed a tightly fought leaderboard into a situation where Coles holds a substantial advantage as Sunday looms. Yet his round was far from straightforward. Canonica made an early push with birdies at the third and fourth to extend his lead to three strokes, while Coles remained patient through the front nine, leaning on his short game and putting to stay within striking distance.
The pivotal moment arrived on the 14th hole. After getting into trouble off the tee and having to chip out from thick rough, Coles managed to salvage an improbable par. Rather than merely limiting the damage, that escape seemed to spark him, fueling a remarkable finish as he birdied each of the final four holes to pull clear of the field.
“I didn’t drive it anywhere near as well as I did yesterday,” Coles said. “But on the back nine I just got it going and before you know it you’re into it.” He also highlighted the 14th as the defining moment, crediting the par save as the catalyst for the late burst that followed.
“It would mean everything,” Coles added when asked about the possibility of another Legends Tour victory. “I really haven’t played that well over the last six to eight months, so to find some form these last two days has been great.”
While Coles claimed the spotlight late in the day, Sweden’s Johan Edfors quietly produced one ofSaturday’s best rounds to move into outright second place on 11-under. Edfors has enjoyed a productive week at Carton House from the outset, with his pro-am team finishing as runners-up ahead of the championship. He carried that momentum into tournament play, carding a six-under 66 in the second round and igniting his charge with a hot streak on the back nine. A lengthy birdie putt on the 10th sparked the surge, followed by further birdies at the 11th, 12th, 15th and 18th to cap an impressive afternoon.
Edfors is still chasing his first win on the Staysure Legends Tour and believes his game is finally moving in the right direction after several encouraging performances. “I gave myself a lot of good chances today and took good advantage of the par fives,” Edfors said. “The putt on 10 really got my round started.” He sits three shots behind Coles.
Canonica had led the way on the opening stretch but now finds himself three behind as the final round approaches. The Italian will be aiming to rally after a day that started with promise but ultimately left him to chase the leaders as Coles set course for a possible title defense on Sunday. With so much at stake and a handful of players within striking distance, the Irish Legends promises a dramatic finish at Carton House.
