Kyle Terada-USA TODAY SportsA New Standard for Team GolfGeoff Ogilvy knows the International team faces a massive uphill battle in Chicago. The American side holds a near-perfect record in this event, and history suggests the home team will win again. Yet the Australian captain refuses to accept that fate. He wants his squad to stop acting like a random collection of stars and start functioning as a unified unit. According to Australian Golf Digest, Ogilvy intends to replicate the victorious cohesion the European Ryder Cup team is famous for. This shift in mindset could be the only way to secure the Internationals’ first victory this century. The 49-year-old skipper believes the old ways no longer work for this specific challenge. The team has already started making changes to how they prepare. Ogilvy told Australian Golf Digest that the dynamic has shifted dramatically from the past. “It used to be a group that would get together every two years and play a golf tournament. Now it’s a constant, the International team,” he said. The players are eating together, playing practice rounds, and building bonds long before the first tee shot drops. They even held a group outing at Medinah last year to get comfortable with the venue. This constant contact helps bridge the gap between players from different nations who might not usually cross paths.Building this chemistry takes time and effort, but the results are showing. Ogilvy noted the difficulty of getting 12 men from various countries to feel like one unit. “It takes a long time to get a group of people from all these different countries feeling like they’re all playing for the same team, if you like,” he explained. Despite the hurdles, the mood inside the camp is positive. “So we’re feeling [like we’re] in a pretty good spot and it’s pretty exciting. The boys are definitely into it,” the captain reported. The focus now is on matching the attention to detail that Luke Donald’s European teams have mastered over the years. The Blueprint for an UpsetThe strategy relies on studying the benchmark of international team golf. Europe has set the standard for creating energy and unity that lasts through the competition. Ogilvy admires how the Europeans leave no stone unturned in their preparation. He told Australian Golf Digest that Luke Donald’s hallmark has been attention to detail. The International team is trying to adopt those same habits to create a similar energy. Ogilvy believes Europe has done a great job of bridging the gap between past players and current stars, and his team is trying to do the same.Ogilvy has been asking himself if this approach is the right path since he took the job. “I asked it a few times. I asked it two years ago when this job started,” he admitted. The answer seems to be yes. The captain has a unique advantage as well, since his design firm, OCM Golf, renovated the No. 3 course at Medinah Country Club. While the course design might offer some fa
