Following a busy spring, Ohio State has been on a recruiting hot streak in recent weeks. The Buckeyes have secured several commitments, lifting their 2027 class to No. 7 overall with the fourth-best per-player ranking in the nation—just a few percentage points behind the top three. Although the current dead period has slowed things since its start, which lasts through the end of July, there remains plenty of excitement on the near horizon.
Coaches cannot directly contact players during this period, but positive news on the trail continues to roll in for Ohio State. On Saturday night, 2028 four-star quarterback Lukas Prock unveiled his top five schools, with Ohio State making the cut alongside Florida, Indiana, Michigan, and Notre Dame. Prock is ranked No. 6 among quarterbacks and No. 69 overall in the 247Sports Composite, and he sits as the No. 3 player in New Jersey. With an offer sheet that includes around 40 programs, narrowing his list to five is a meaningful milestone, and Ohio State remains a premier destination for quarterback talent.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound signal-caller threw for more than 4,300 yards and 42 touchdowns during a standout sophomore season, completing over 73 percent of his passes. A Massachusetts native, Prock transferred to Hun in Princeton, New Jersey after a freshman year at Wellesley High in which he threw for more than 2,100 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just four interceptions.
Ohio State, despite its proven success at quarterback, finds itself in a delicate recruiting position at the moment. After leading the class for a long period, Buckeyes’ 2027 quarterback commit Brady Edmunds is weighing whether to stay with his pledge to play in Columbus or switch his commitment to UCLA. The program is also continuing to pursue the nation’s top quarterback in the 2028 class, having intensified contact with five-star Christopher Vargas recently. Prock adds another intriguing option for head coach Ryan Day and his staff, which already appears set at quarterback for the near future with Julian Sayin slated to lead in 2026 and Tavien St. Clair waiting in the wings.
Elsewhere, Ohio State will soon learn its fate with five-star wide receiver Monshun Sales. The No. 2 wide receiver and No. 8 overall in the 2027 class is expected to make his decision this coming Friday, July 17, from a final group that includes the Buckeyes along with Alabama, Indiana, LSU, and Texas. At the moment, it seems Ohio State is on the periphery, with the Hoosiers or the Longhorns appearing more likely to land Sales’ commitment in the near term.
The Buckeyes remain in contention down to the final whistle, and in the NIL era, no recruitment is ever truly finished. Yet, as things stand, Indiana or Texas appears poised to secure Sales’ pledge this weekend. New position coach Carlos Hankton has already yielded strong early returns, continuing to keep the program’s momentum strong for what could be another banner recruiting cycle.
