Oilers complete $2.4 million contract with 23-year old brother of Canadiens forward

The Edmonton Oilers have no plans to part ways with Colton Dach, who is 23 years old. On Sunday, the team announced a two-year contract extension totaling $2.4 million, which breaks down to $1.2 million per season. Dach is the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens forward Kirby Dach.
Colton Dach joined Edmonton midseason in a trade that sent Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks, in exchange for Jason Dickinson. After arriving, Dach appeared in eight regular-season games with the Oilers, recording two goals and two assists. In the playoffs, he played five games and added one assist.
Prior to the trade, Dach had recorded nine points over 53 games with the Blackhawks. He was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. His development years included time in the Western Hockey League with the Kelowna Rockets and the Seattle Thunderbirds, where he honed his game before advancing to the NHL. The 2023-24 season saw him in the American Hockey League with Chicago’s affiliate in Rockford. Over the last two seasons, he has divided time between the NHL and the AHL in 2024-25 as well.
The Oilers are not expecting Dach to anchor their top lines. Nevertheless, at 23 years old with strong hockey lineage, keeping him around makes sense, especially given the midseason acquisition and the potential upside he still possesses. The price tag is modest, which should leave Edmonton feeling satisfied with the move from a business perspective.
As for broader context, Dach’s height and reach have been noted in discussions about his ceiling, while his draft pedigree indicated he had potential to grow into a larger role. Other recent developments in Oilers news have included strategic considerations around lineup construction, the value of depth players, and ongoing evaluations of young talents from both the NHL club and its development affiliates. The organization’s decision to extend Dach signals a measured approach to building depth while continuing to evaluate the fit of players who can contribute at the right moments, even if they aren’t immediate top-line contributors.
