OK, technically speaking, Christian Pulisic’s injury actually does need rest

Christian Pulisic has faced a flurry of criticism this week. After the United States Men’s National Team suffered a humiliating exit from the men’s World Cup on Monday night, a heated debate over Pulisic’s toughness and heart erupted in the wake of his remarks about needing a rest. Carli Lloyd publicly challenged Pulisic, and so did Landon Donovan, as the backlash intensified. In the midst of the scrutiny, Pulisic attempted to take the high road with a conventional “thank you for your support” message on Instagram.
In actual medical terms, though, Pulisic clearly needed rest. The Athletic reported that Pulisic sustained a bone bruise and a microfracture in his leg during the USMNT’s 4-1 loss to Belgium in the Round of 16. The injury occurred in the 52nd minute when Pulisic collided with Youri Tielemans’ calf after attempting a shot from just outside the box. He left the field and had to be substituted. Had the United States advanced to the quarterfinals to face Spain, Pulisic, who was seen on crutches in the subsequent days, would not have been able to play.
That puts the doubts about Pulisic’s will to win or his perceived toughness into a different light. While reasonable discussions can still be had about his overall form prior to the injury and whether he’s been overly prone to injuries, there is no denying that he was genuinely hurt in this particular instance. If one wants to frame the discussion as a matter of pain tolerance, that interpretation is allowed, though it varies from player to player—even for the best on the USMNT.
This piece originally appeared on For The Win: From a purely technical standpoint, Christian Pulisic’s injury indeed requires rest for proper healing. The situation invites considerations about how fans and analysts evaluate resilience and recovery, especially when a player’s performance and physical well-being intersect in high-stakes international competition.
