The UFC heavyweight division has a fresh, elite super prospect in Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson. At UFC 329 on Saturday night, one of the most gifted prospects ever to step into the Octagon made his promotional debut on the preliminary card, as two-time NCAA Division I champion Steveson faced Elisha Ellison. There was a heavy amount of hype surrounding the 26-year-old entering the bout, and he delivered in dramatic fashion, solidifying the buzz with a emphatic performance.
Ellison, who entered the fight with more professional experience, appeared outmatched against the world-class athlete, yet Steveson did not lean on his wrestling pedigree to dominate. Instead, he continued a trend of staying on his feet and trading strikes, using his speed and raw power to keep Ellison off balance. At times, the American challenger found himself in harm’s way, stepping into exchanges with his hands low and taking some risky shots. But Steveson’s advantages in speed and power proved overwhelming, and Ellison could not capitalize on any openings.
After a controlled start in the first round, Steveson landed a sequence of punishing blows, including sharp knees and heavy haymakers, which eventually dropped Ellison and prompted referee Mark Goddard to halt the contest. The finish capped another standout performance for the rising prospect, who did not attempt a single takedown yet still outstruck a more seasoned opponent to earn his hand raised.
Despite his relatively limited combat sports experience and coming from a sport without a traditional striking base, Steveson’s hands look increasingly dangerous, and he is showing steady growth in his kicking game as well. His front kicks were a valuable asset throughout the UFC 329 victory, contributing to his overall game plan and effectiveness on the feet.
Steveson’s athletic journey has been unconventional. After exhausting his freestyle wrestling options, he briefly explored pro wrestling, signing a developmental deal with WWE in 2021. He eventually chose to leave that path behind three years later and pivot to mixed martial arts in 2023. Since then, he has recorded first-round knockouts in all four of his professional MMA bouts, underscoring his rapid ascendancy in the heavyweight division.
