(Alan Arsenault/Special to the Telegram & Gazette) WORCESTER — Last year, Oxford’s Senior League squad came up one win short of reaching the Senior League Baseball World Series in South Carolina, having gone undefeated up to the regional championship in Maine. This year, Oxford took a significant step toward avenging that loss on Sunday, July 12, with a dominant 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Melrose at Fitton Field, sealing their second consecutive Massachusetts Senior League Baseball state title. The win followed a 10-0 semifinal triumph over Worcester West on Saturday, giving Oxford an 8-0 tournament run during which they outscored opponents 87-14.
Oxford advances to the Little League East Regional Tournament in Bangor, Maine, where they are slated to meet the Maryland state champions at 4:30 p.m. on July 21. In the Senior Division State Championship, Oxford’s Chase Reyes took the mound, delivering a standout performance that underscored the team’s depth. Head coach Jason Reyes highlighted the return of roughly half the squad from the previous year, a group that includes many who also compete at the varsity level for their high schools, as a key strength. Among those back is his son Chase, who pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings while contributing four hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs.
“He brings his best when the games matter most,” said Coach Reyes, describing it as a proud moment for a father. On the mound, Chase allowed three hits and three walks while striking out seven before reaching his pitch-count limit. Mason Foskett closed the top of the sixth by striking out the sole batter he faced on three pitches. “Mason came in and finished it off; he’s the same kid, throwing with the same velocity, and presenting the same good change-up and curveball. We don’t lose much when we bring him in,” Reyes added.
Chase opened the scoring with a two-run ground-rule double to left-center in the third inning, and Owen Leary drove in two more with a two-bagger in the fifth, but the game effectively ended with a six-run sixth inning. Colton Toedt and Xavier Higgins each contributed hits, while Adam Sliwoski and Andy Collin also had their moments at the plate as Oxford’s offense rolled. The defense held firm behind Reyes, with solid support from the bullpen in the crucial late innings.
The victory continued Oxford’s impressive run through the state tournament, setting up a high-profile regional challenge and reaffirming the program’s status as a perennial contender in New England youth baseball. The team’s balanced attack, led by timely hitting from the middle of the lineup and protected by a sturdy pitching staff, demonstrated why Oxford remains a formidable force in the Senior Division. As they prepared for the East Regional, the Oxford players and coaching staff remained focused on sustaining the momentum, continuing to emphasize fundamentals, consistent preparation, and the confidence that has carried them through a demanding postseason schedule.
