The Patriots begin training camp on July 21. Despite the team making some big additions in the offseason, including A.J. Brown, there are two areas of concern surrounding the team.ESPN’s Mike Reiss pinpointed Christian Gonzalez and Gabe Jacas’ contract status.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementGonzalez wasn’t present during OTAs due to a contract holdout, and minimally participated during mandatory minicamp.“That could be a preview of what training camp will look like if he and the team can’t find common ground on his contract, which calls for him to earn $2.259 million this season,” Reiss wrote. “Gonzalez is eligible for an extension for the first time, top cornerbacks are making more than $30 million per season, and he said in June that he hopes to be rewarded as a Patriot.”The Patriots exercised Gonzalez’s fifth-year option for 2027 in April, which added another year to his contract. It’s possible the star cornerback’s next deal could reset the market. Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie is currently the NFL’s highest-paid CB, making $31 million per season.BETTING: The Patriots are sitting at +145 to win the AFC East Division next season on BetMGM. Then there’s Jacas, who the Patriots drafted in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The linebacker has yet to sign his rookie contract.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementJacas, who wasn’t at minicamp, also underwent an offseason procedure on his knee.“Not having second-round draft pick Gabe Jacas present for most of the offseason program because he underwent a “cleanup” knee procedure, per a source familiar with his recovery, and remains unsigned,” Reiss wrote. “The Patriots traded up for Jacas because they value his edge-setting and pass-rush ability.”Patriots outside linebackers coach Mike Smith revealed in June that Jacas will be behind after missing both summer workouts. The Patriots drafted Jacas in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Edge rusher was a major need for New England and helped fill that role by using the 55th overall pick.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementRead the original article on MassLive.
