PhHN Daily: Flyers Mailbag; Hellegone?; Defensemen Market Reset

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

It’s been a while since we last published a PhHN Daily edition, so we figured it was high time to bring one back. Last week, the Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks kept us waiting as the Leo Carlsson saga finally reached its conclusion. For Philadelphia, the result didn’t crown them as the No. 1 center they were hoping to land. Yet even with that outcome, there’s plenty of fallout to dissect.
Around the league, a superstar goalie could be moving on, and two veteran defensemen are poised to reset the market for defensemen in the NHL. Questions remain for all 32 teams, and one NHL Insider weighs in with those lingering uncertainties. In the National Hockey Now network, we explore one of last season’s biggest “What Ifs” and consider how a different outcome might have reshaped the offseason. We also examine a team that clearly improved this summer but will still be dealing with the departures that affected them.
You’ll find all of this in the 7/12 PhHN Daily. Let’s kick things off with the Philly mailbag. Free agency has come and gone, and now we’re looking ahead to the 2026-27 season. If you have questions about the coming year, we’ve got answers. Don’t miss our Flyers Summer Mailbag 2.0 as well.
We touched on the Leo Carlsson saga and wrapped up the week’s long wait by examining what comes next for the Flyers after missing out on the star center, and what kind of fallout could be on the horizon. Across Sportsnet, Elliotte Friedman posed one lingering question for every team after the free-agency frenzy, and for the Flyers his question centered on the Carlsson development: “What effect will the Leo Carlsson offer sheet have on the rest of the roster?” It’s a compelling issue worth exploring further down the line.
Over at the Winnipeg Free Press, Mike McIntyre analyzes whether Connor Hellebuyck might truly be on his way out, breaking down the trade chatter surrounding the league’s top goalie and suggesting the Jets’ netminder could be nearing a departure from Winnipeg. ESPN’s coverage hints at record-breaking extensions for Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes as they approach 2027 UFAs, with projections that their new deals could eclipse Carlsson’s $18 million AAV. Ryan Clark explains how these deals are likely to reset the defensemen market.
Detroit Hockey Now looks at a hypothetical: what if the Detroit Red Wings had made the playoffs last season? Bob Duff investigates whether such a scenario would have altered their offseason, and whether Dylan Larkin might have chosen to stay if the team had reached the postseason. Florida Hockey Now notes that the Florida Panthers clearly improved this summer, but the changes weren’t without cost. Sergei Bobrovsky and Evan Rodrigues moved on to new clubs, and George Richards chronicles how the Panthers’ star will miss his departing teammates.
