Piers Morgan sends brutal response to Gabriel Agbonlahor over Cristiano Ronaldo criticism

Piers Morgan has stepped to defend his friend and Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo after he came under fire from Gabriel Agbonlahor. In recent remarks, Agbonlahor accused Ronaldo of prioritizing his own interests over Portugal’s during the FIFA World Cup. Unsurprisingly, Morgan fired back at the former Aston Villa and England striker, whom he believes has never approached Ronaldo’s level and who, in his view, cannot comprehend the records Ronaldo has piled up—the Portuguese star simply outclasses the man who once wore the England jersey.
Morgan took to X to respond to a clip featuring Agbonlahor’s criticisms of Ronaldo, not holding back in his reply. He suggested that Agbonlahor has never come close to Ronaldo and insisted that Ronaldo holds more football records than Agbonlahor could ever conceive. In Morgan’s view, the “greatest of all time” label is deserved by Ronaldo, and his achievements far surpass what Agbonlahor has accomplished on the pitch.
The support from Morgan builds on his long-standing defense of Ronaldo, a stance that intensified after he interviewed Ronaldo during the latter stages of his Manchester United tenure. Since that interview, Morgan has acted as something of an unofficial press partner for Ronaldo, often conducting high-profile conversations with him and amplifying the Ronaldo narrative in public discourse.
One of Agbonlahor’s central criticisms during his TalkSport appearance was that Ronaldo did not press or sprint enough for his team. He asserted that, at times, Ronaldo appeared to be “walking football,” arguing that a forward of Ronaldo’s caliber must run the channels, create space, and actively contribute to building attacking opportunities for his teammates.
At 41, Ronaldo’s game has evolved into a more measured, conservative style. He is frequently described as a diminished version of his peak self, adapting to the physical realities of aging while still influencing games through positioning, finishing, and intelligence rather than sheer pace. Yet questions persist about how his teammates around him—other Portuguese players—could have created more chances to maximize Ronaldo’s scoring potential. The debate touches on broader issues about how teams deploy star forwards later in their careers and how the supporting cast around them can optimize their talents.
As Ronaldo continues to compete at the highest levels, conversations about his legacy, his influence on the national team, and the balance between individual brilliance and collective responsibility will likely endure. Morgan’s defense of Ronaldo highlights a broader discourse about recognition, rivalry, and the ongoing debate over who truly represents the pinnacle of football greatness.
