Project B, the new global basketball league for women and men, has appointed former Atlanta Hawks general manager Landry Fields as the head of men’s basketball. The announcement, made on Thursday morning, states that Fields will supervise men’s player recruitment and team operations while collaborating closely with the league’s chief basketball officer, Alana Beard. Beard, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA draft, praised Fields for his deep understanding of the game. “He’s been a player, he’s built teams, and he knows that culture doesn’t happen by accident,” she said in a league-issued statement.
The league has already begun launching its women’s circuit, with about a dozen female players committing to participate so far. Among them are Dallas Wings rookie Azzi Fudd, former WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike, Alyssa Thomas, Jonquel Jones, Jewell Loyd, and Seattle Storm rookie Awa Fam. The roster pool includes many young talents from around the world who are expected to join the competition.
Project B is planned to feature six teams with 11 players each and intends to stage exhibition-style games across Europe and Asia. Valencia, Spain, and Tokyo have been announced as two of the host cities. The competition is slated to debut early next year, with the men’s and women’s circuits operating simultaneously from January through April.
Fields’ background in basketball spans five NBA seasons with the New York Knicks and the Toronto Raptors before he emerged as a rising executive off the court. He began as a scout with San Antonio in 2016 and joined the Hawks as an assistant general manager in 2020. He later served as Atlanta’s general manager from 2022 to 2025. In his new role with Project B, Fields will focus on identifying elite talent and up-and-coming players for the men’s side, mirroring the approach already taken with the women’s circuit.
“What drew me to Project B was the ambition,” Fields said in a league-provided statement. “Project B has brought together some of the world’s top athletes. I’ve known Nneka Ogwumike since Stanford, and she’s exactly the kind of culture setter you want to build with. When you combine leaders like Nneka with global stars like Azzi Fudd and Awa Fam, you see a platform that’s investing in the future of the sport. I’m excited to work closely with players to shape where the game goes next.”
