Quansah banned for two games after Mexico red card

England defender Jarell Quansah has received a two-match ban after his red card against Mexico. Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute of the 3-2 victory following a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo, an offense classified as serious foul play. As a result, the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder faces an extra suspension on top of the automatic one-game ban handed down by FIFA’s disciplinary committee. The 23-year-old former Liverpool man will miss England’s quarter-final against Norway on Saturday (kick-off 22:00 BST) and a potential semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland. If England advance to the final in New Jersey on 19 July, Quansah would be available to play.
The Football Association had been weighing an appeal, but tournament regulations do not provide a route to contest the ban. The punishment adds to perceived inconsistencies in how red cards are treated, notably in the case of United States forward Folarin Balogun. Balogun was dismissed for serious foul play against Bosnia-Herzegovina and should have faced a two-game ban, but FIFA decided on a one-match suspension with a 12-month probation period. The 25-year-old was slated to miss the last-16 clash with Belgium, yet FIFA’s decision sparked widespread criticism within the sport, including responses from Uefa, Belgium, and England boss Thomas Tuchel.
France has also submitted a challenge regarding Michael Olise’s yellow card from their victory over Paraguay, though FIFA dismissed that challenge. The World Cup knockout path to Qatar 2026 continues to generate debate about disciplinary decisions and their consistency across teams and confederations.
