Rex wrap up one win, then absorb first loss of season’s 2nd half

Terre Haute’s Terre Haute Rex, widely regarded as the hottest Eastern Conference squad in the second half of the Prospect League season, split a doubleheader Thursday night at Bob Warn Field. The Rex opened with an 11-1 victory over the visiting Decatur Bean Ballers in a makeup game that had been postponed by rain on June 26. In the nightcap, however, Terre Haute fell 10-4 to Decatur, dropping the Rex’s second-half record to 8-1. After these results, Terre Haute faced a Saturday night matchup against the Kokomo Creek Chubs, as Friday’s planned game at Thrillville was wiped out by rain. With that schedule in mind, Terre Haute still clung to a one-game lead over Danville (7-2) in the Eastern Conference Central Division, as the league resumed its regular schedule following the All-Star break in the wood-bat summer collegiate circuit.
In the opening game, the Rex claimed victory in five innings after leaping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Nomar Garcia’s two-run homer to left field. Decatur rallied for a single run in the second, but Terre Haute responded with a six-run fourth inning and a three-run fifth to seal the win. The clutch hits that powered the early blowout included Nazhir Bergen’s RBI double, Renn Harper’s two-run double, and Nate Millington’s RBI triple to center. Gio Mendoza, Bergen, and Millington each collected two hits apiece. Jean Quezada pitched the full five innings to improve to 3-2 on the season, fanning six and issuing just one walk to help lock down the victory.
The nightcap proved more challenging for the Rex. Decatur drew three runs in the top of the first, but Terre Haute answered with a four-run second to retake the lead. Wally Diaz delivered an RBI double while Millington added two runs with a single in the same frame. Nevertheless, the Bean Ballers surged back with seven consecutive scores over the next three innings, and Terre Haute was held off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Decatur (3-8) seized momentum and kept the Rex off balance with timely hitting and sustained pressure.
To cap a pitching staff effort, a quartet of Rex hurlers worked in relief and together totaled eight strikeouts while issuing seven walks to Decatur across the game. The split leaves Terre Haute’s second-half record at 8-1 and maintains a slender lead in the tightly contested Central Division, though the Rex will need clean, consistent performances as they continue to navigate a demanding stretch run. As the league moves past the All-Star break, Terre Haute remains a focal point of attention for fans eager to see whether this dynamic squad can sustain its level of play through the summer’s remaining weeks.
