Saints CB Martin Emerson returns for annual youth football camp

New Orleans Saints defensive back Martin Emerson Jr. still remembers the first time he stepped into the gym and later walked onto the field at Lon R. Wise Stadium, the same place where he would star before heading to Mississippi State in 2019 and eventually being drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Those early memories come flooding back whenever he hosts his annual football camp, which he now calls “the opportunity of a lifetime.” From a kid in the crowd more than a decade ago, Emerson has grown into a mentor who believes in giving back to the community that helped shape him. “One day they’ll be in our shoes and he’ll be leading our community,” Emerson said. “Any way I can better the next generation and give them fruits, that’s what I’m willing to do. That’s why I feel like God has placed me here.”
This year, Emerson’s camp stretched to two days. July 9 featured 7-on-7 pool play, and the following day was dedicated to the youth camp, with the 7-on-7 championships to come. The gatherings serve not only to inspire the next generation of Pensacola-area football players but also to bring the local football community together for a reunion. The camp drew a notable lineup, including former NFL cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy, who helped coach, and Thomarius “Pooda” Walker, a Pine Forest star who finished his college career as a defensive lineman at Memphis last year. Jacob Copeland, who played at Florida and Maryland, made an appearance as well. Emerson’s fellow Pine Forest alumnus and current head coach Jason McDonald, along with Pine Forest defensive backs coach Kadetrix Marcus, were in attendance. Even Jarrian Jones, a Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back who played with Emerson at Mississippi State in 2019 and is a close friend, made the two-and-a-half-hour drive from Mississippi to be there on a hot Pensacola morning.
“He’s a great person,” Jones said. “He’s a people person. Anytime he meets someone, whether he knows you or not, he just wants the best for you. He wants to pour into you; he wants to pour greatness into you.” For Emerson, the goal of the camp is to show young attendees that they can chart a path toward their dreams, and that path isn’t limited to football. He stresses that success starts with the classroom, remains grounded in faith, and flourishes through strong family relationships. He believes that surrounding oneself with like-minded people enhances the journey toward personal goals. The emphasis is on building character, leadership, and a mindset geared toward achievement—principles he hopes will guide the campers long after they leave the field.
Emerson’s influence stretches back to his days as a Pine Forest standout, where he played in a secondary that also produced NFL-caliber talent. Devon Witherspoon, for one, has gone on to earn multiple Pro Bowl selections and is recognized as a rising star in the league. The camaraderie and mentorship at Emerson’s camp aim to extend that legacy, helping young athletes realize that their dreams can become reality with dedication, discipline, and a strong support system.
As the camp continues to grow, Emerson continues to lead by example, demonstrating that success in football can coincide with responsibility off the field. He remains committed to giving back to the Pensacola community that supported him from the earliest days of his journey, and he hopes that the next generation will walk the same path with confidence, purpose, and the pursuit of excellence.
