ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – If you considered seeding, you could call the Class 5A state championship boys’ game a Cinderella battle. Two high seeds, the Sandia Matadors at number nine and the Capital Jaguars at number seven, decided the champion, with Sandia winning in a blowout at the end, 5-1.Teo Ojeda scored two goals in the second half to help the Matadors complete their improbable run to the blue trophy. Sandia showed flashes of doing something special back in the quarterfinals when they knocked defending champion and number one seed La Cueva out of the postseason. They followed that up with a semifinal defeat of the Cleveland Storm and refused to be denied in the final. “I feel like I am on top of the world, in the clouds, what can you see more,” said Sandia head coach Ryan Sanchez. “I have always seen this team winning state, and that’s never been on the back burner; like, they can win everything that they want. I hoped it had happened the last time; we stumbled at the end, but this time it wasn’t going to happen that way.” It’s the third boys’ soccer championship title in Sandia history and the first since 1992.Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
