Sean Strickland tells Bud Light to stand by Dustin Poirier, reveals why he initially reacted so harshly to his arrest

Sean Strickland has rapidly shifted from being one of Dustin Poirier’s sharpest critics to becoming his most vocal defender, as the former interim lightweight champion continues to navigate the fallout from his arrest on a public drunkenness charge following an ugly incident at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport. After issuing an apology to Poirier following a conversation about the arrest, Strickland explained why his initial anger toward the retired fighter was so strong, noting that he hadn’t fully grasped the context of Poirier’s story at the time.
In the past, Strickland has spoken openly about growing up in an abusive household, a history he says largely shaped his complicated relationship with his father. On Instagram, Strickland shared that he has been reflecting on a particular bottle of Bud Light and on Poirier, whom he reached out to for perspective. He admitted that his first response was tinged with anger and condescension, and he had to work through the reasons behind that reaction. He explained: Bud Light has spent billions on advertising—promoting pool parties, attractive hosts, and a cowboy-hatted figure with a flag—none of which, in his view, reflected the version of the brand he had experienced. For Strickland, the bottle is a painful symbol: it conjures memories of his father coming home late at night, grabbing a cold beer, and turning into a monster who could imperil everyone around him. That image, he said, has the power to wreck lives—including his own, his father’s, and generations before them. To Strickland, the bottle represents immense misery, and whenever he sees people consuming it in a gleeful context, it triggers that personal history and anger. He acknowledged this as a personal flaw and said he needed to move past it.
Strickland also acknowledged that his own experiences with alcohol—rooted in his upbringing—colored his initial reaction to Poirier’s arrest and to Poirier’s candid discussion about the challenges he has faced since retiring from competition. After sitting down with Poirier to discuss the situation in full, Strickland gained a new understanding of why he had lashed out so harshly at the time.
“There are so many Americans who drink and still love life,” Strickland said. “They go out and play catch with their son, and I love that image. But sadly, that isn’t the case for everyone. A lot of Americans are struggling. They don’t have to go to a dealer on the corner; they can simply walk into a supermarket and buy as many of these as they want. For those Americans who don’t abuse it and who are just living life, I wish them the best.”
Following that realization, Strickland sent a direct message to Bud Light as a brand, responding to rumors that the beer company was considering cutting ties with Poirier in the aftermath of the arrest. Poirier had already disclosed that a major sponsor had dropped him, and he anticipated more sponsorship fallout in the near future. Bud Light, for its part, has not commented publicly on Poirier’s arrest.
