Card manufacturers are increasingly searching for ways to add true utility to sports cards. In today’s hobby, utility means pulling more than just a rare piece of cardboard—it means unlocking player visits, VIP experiences, additional memorabilia, or exclusive 1-of-1 bounties. We have seen this play out recently with “Follow Back” cards, where redeeming the hit guarantees the featured athlete follows the collector on Instagram. Topps has also leaned heavily into utility, randomly inserting tickets to the Home Run Derby and All-Star events directly into packs. One of the highest-profile examples occurred in 2023, when Topps invited anyone who pulled a green /99 Victor Wembanyama autograph from 2022-23 Bowman Chrome U to a private event with the rising star, culminating in one collector receiving Wemby’s special “My first auto card.” On the ultra-high-end side of the market, Topps operates the Three Kings platform, a bounty program where collectors who assemble a player’s three rarest cards unlock a special exclusive issue.Recently, manufacturers have started experimenting with shared player-collector print runs. To celebrate the Milwaukee Brewers’ 2026 World Series victory, every player in the Topps NOW championship team set, which must be purchased by November 4, has a Diamond Parallel limited to just two copies: one gifted to the player inside a custom diamond chain, and the matching copy randomly inserted into a collector’s set. Now, Upper Deck is taking this shared collector-athlete utility to the next level with the announcement of its new “2 of a Kind” program. Debuting in the 2026-27 O-Pee-Chee release, the program features an extensive 100-player NHL checklist designed to forge a direct connection between the fan and the athlete. The premise is straightforward: the cards are printed as a matching set of exactly two. The 1-of-2 card is gifted directly to the featured NHL player, while the 2-of-2 card is inserted into packs for the public. The cards will stand out aesthetically, featuring a metallic foilboard front and a rose gold substrate on the back.Upper Deck’s Director of Sports Brands, Paul Zickler, emphasized the accessibility of the chase, noting that these matching pairs will debut in an approachable product available at both hobby shops and major retailers. Crucially, Zickler confirmed that the cards are live in packs, meaning collectors will not have to deal with redemptions.“The feeling of pulling a rare card of your favorite player is unique, and it’s hard to recreate. That, plus our constant goal of trying to connect collectors with their favorite players, was the basis for 2 of a Kind,” said Jason Masherah, President of Upper Deck. “With only two cards being created of each player, them getting one and a collector getting the other, we can’t wait to see the reactions and interactions this program brings for years to come.”The utility of the 2-of-2 card extends beyond simply sharing a print ru
