​The Houston Rockets have some important decisions to make in regards to the future of this team. There’s a few young guys that were snagged in the lottery, and they all have to continue to develop. They also have a 24 year old All-Star who’s already more accomplished than any of the higher draft picks. If the Rockets are going to continue forward with Alperen Şengün on the roster, their best path would be to ensure he gets minutes at power forward. It just seems to work best for him and the team. He can’t consistently use his strength as an advantage against a lot of bigger centers, and hasn’t been quick enough to always get by them either. He has much more favorable matchups against power forwards, assuming he doesn’t get torched on the other end. If you can find the perfect center, I’d even consider starting the double-big lineup like we’ve seen with Steven Adams in the past. While that proved to be effective, Adams won’t be around forever. The Rockets need to fix their problem at that position, as covered on Roundtable. There’s three non-shooters, and two of them might not see minutes in the playoffs. We already saw Clint Capela get played off the court. So why not make a move with that in mind? Why not build around your two-time All-Star who’s making $35.64 million next season. It just seems silly not to, but this team hasn’t picked a clear path yet. Obviously it’s easier said than done to get a stretch big who can also protect the rim and clean the glass, but it’s not impossible. It’d be a financial commitment, but I proposed a swap of Fred VanVleet for Myles Turner here on Roundtable. Even going after a guy like Nikola Vucevic in free agency could’ve been a nice conservative move. He signed the veteran’s minimum for a player with his experience, choosing the return to the Orlando Magic. He’s not the rim protector that you’d want, but I still find it odd that Rafael Stone and this front office has never gone after a stretch five. The last guy who fit that role was Christian Wood, or maybe Jock Landale in his short stay here. It’s unfortunate that the Rockets haven’t done anything to put Şengün in position to excel through the years, and are still just sticking with the status quo. It really makes me question what this team’s long-term goals are.
