This weekend in Los Angeles, a number of renowned distance runners are traveling to the City of Angels for the Sound Running Sunset Tour presented by Brooks. The meet features several of the top American distance runners who are aiming to post qualifying marks for the upcoming U.S. Outdoor Championships later this month. The event promises a high-stakes atmosphere as athletes push to secure their spots and lay down fast times on a notable stage.
Weekend Recovery: Digesting The Prefontaine Classic is among the highlights, with updated Wanda Diamond League standings and a look ahead at the 2026 Sound Running Sunset Tour entries. Fans can watch the 2026 Sunset Tour presented by Brooks as it unfolds, and get a sense of which athletes might emerge as contenders for national and international honors this season.
Among the headliners is Mario García Romo, a mid-distance talent who once ran 3:29.18 in Oslo a couple of years ago while competing for the On Athletics Club. After earning a place on the inaugural Olympic team, the Spaniard faced a setback when a stress fracture forced him to take time away from competition. Now in his late twenties, Romo is returning to the racing scene and hoping for a breakout performance in Los Angeles. His last outing was a 3:38.45 at the Portland Track Festival, his fastest time since 2024. As he continues to rebuild his form this weekend, he’ll be surrounded by a talented pack that could help him reach a career-best time in years.
Also contesting the meet is Brian Masai (KEN), a recently graduated Arkansas Razorback who brings a 3:33.17 personal best from a few months ago at the Arkansas Twilight meet. Max Davies (CAN), Waleed Suliman (USA), and John Reniewicki (USA) arrive with PBs at or under 3:33, and all three have a plausible shot at winning while two of them chase the automatic U.S. Championship standard of 3:34.5 for the 1500m.
In addition to the milers and half-milers, a number of well-known distance specialists are stepping down to test their range, including Sean McGorty, Duncan Hamilton, and one of the sport’s most reliable closers in recent memory, Woody Kincaid. Their presence adds depth and intrigue to a meet that could reveal who has the momentum heading into the summer championships.
Of course, fans won’t forget Courtney Frerichs (USA), who produced one of the boldest moves in an Olympic final we’ve witnessed in Tokyo five years ago. In a near-empty stadium, Frerichs widened the pace in the 3000m steeplechase final with several laps remaining and ultimately earned Olympic silver. Five years later, the American record holder for the event is aiming to regain her steeple legs, entering her first steeplechase race since July 2023. After enduring multiple ankle injuries and a complete ACL tear, Frerichs returns to a discipline that made her a household name, with a clear goal of qualifying for the USA Outdoor Championships by running 9:41 or faster.
The field also features Maddie Boreman, Logan Jolly, Emma Gee, and Stevie Lawrence, among others, and presents a total lineup of 12 women, with 11 of them boasting personal bests under 10:00 for the 3000m steeplechase. The stage is set for a fast, competitive race that could reshape the event’s national standings and serve as a springboard for a number of athletes this season.
Turning to the men’s side, the Final Surge 3000m Steeplechase promises to be a mini-preview of the month’s U.S. final, as several international threats join a strong domestic field. In total, seven entrants own a PB under 8:20, underscoring the high level of competition and the potential for fast times that could resonate beyond Los Angeles. The combination of elite talent, strategic pacing, and the drive to secure national qualification makes this weekend’s racing a pivotal moment for athletes aiming to make their mark at the U.S. Outdoor Championships.
