Slumping White Sox activate rookie Munetaka Murakami from 10-day injured list

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox received a much-needed lift on Friday with the activation of rookie slugger Munetaka Murakami from the 10-day injured list. Murakami had been sidelined after straining his right hamstring during a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on May 29. At the time of the injury, the Japanese infielder was among the American League leaders with 20 homers, 41 RBIs, 43 runs scored, and a .947 OPS, making his absence especially painful for a team already navigating a rough stretch.
Entering the weekend, the White Sox had dropped three straight games and six of their last eight, setting the stage for a crucial series against the Oakland Athletics. With Murakami back in the lineup, Chicago hopes to regain the momentum they briefly found earlier in the season when his power and on-base ability provided a steadying presence in the middle of the order. During his stint on the injured list, the White Sox finished the stretch going 17-18, a mark that underscores how pivotal Murakami’s production can be for the club as they push to climb back into contention.
In a corresponding move, infielder Jacob Gonzalez was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte. The 24-year-old Gonzalez, who was Chicago’s first-round pick in the 2023 amateur draft, had spent time in the majors this season and hit .244 with two home runs and 17 RBIs over 30 games. His call-up and subsequent option to the minors illustrate the ongoing balancing act the White Sox face as they manage a roster that’s trying to maximize potential while addressing the team’s immediate needs.
Murakami, who signed a $34 million, two-year contract with Chicago this past December, has been no stranger to the spotlight since joining the club. He had two rehab appearances with Charlotte as part of his return-to-play process, where he went 2-for-7 with a double. Those rehab efforts were a key step in returning him to the big-league club, where his bat can help stabilize an offense that has struggled at times this season.
For fans and analysts alike, Murakami’s return is a reminder of the potential impact a dynamic bat can have in a lineup that has been inconsistent at times. The White Sox will rely on Murakami to provide big hit potential, drive in runs, and add the kind of slugging threat that can stretch opposing pitching staffs. If he can re-find his form quickly after the hamstring issue, Chicago’s offense could gain the spark it has been seeking.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how Murakami adjusts back into game rhythms after the layoff and whether he can recapture the form that made him a focal point of Chicago’s offensive plans. The team’s performance in the upcoming series against the Athletics will likely offer a gauge of how effective his return proves to be and whether his presence can help the White Sox turn a challenging stretch into a more competitive run as they head toward the latter part of the season. AP MLB coverage continues to follow Murakami’s reintroduction to the lineup and the White Sox’ ongoing efforts to stabilize and strengthen their roster.
