Ole Miss’s star pitcher Hunter Elliott has announced his intention to return to Ole Miss for a sixth season in 2027. The announcement came with a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) July 11, where Elliott shared a photo of himself pitching for Ole Miss and captioned it with “Unfinished business.” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco amplified the news by resharing the image and writing, “The champ is back.”
Elliott stands as the last remaining member of the Rebels’ 2022 national championship squad. He is eligible for a sixth season in 2027 thanks to a medical redshirt, which allows athletes in certain circumstances to extend their college careers. The timing of the news coincided with the eve of the 2026 MLB Draft, adding another layer of significance as teams were preparing to evaluate prospects.
Throughout his tenure in Oxford, Elliott has been a steady and seasoned presence on the mound, earning a reputation as a calm veteran who anchors the Rebels’ pitching staff. He is widely regarded as a shrewd and resilient pitcher who can navigate jams and extend outings. Bianco has lauded him for possessing “as much guts as anybody that’s ever put on this uniform,” underscoring the intangible leadership he provides to the rotation.
Elliott’s career has not been without its setbacks. After an impressive freshman campaign in 2022, injuries limited his availability, limiting him to just two appearances in 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He also sat out the 2024 season. Nevertheless, he returned to form in 2025 and 2026, continuing to prove his durability and competitiveness even as he edges toward age 24. The right-hander was drafted in the 20th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024 but opted to withdraw from the 2025 MLB Draft to return to Ole Miss.
Over the years, Elliott has built a reputation for delivering in high-leverage moments. Ole Miss boasts a strong track record in the NCAA Tournament when he starts, going 7-1 all-time in such games. His statistical numbers reflect a productive career: a 2.70 ERA over his standout 2022 season, followed by a 2.94 ERA in 2025 and a 5.40 ERA in 2026 across three full seasons. Across 256 2/3 innings, he has accumulated 327 strikeouts and 126 walks, leaving him with a career record of 21-10 at Ole Miss.
As Elliott prepares to return for another year, the Rebels will once again rely on his experience and poise to anchor a pitching staff in a conference known for its offensive firepower and competitive balance. His leadership extends beyond the mound, as teammates and coaches look to him for steadiness during the grind of a long season and the pressure of postseason play. Elliott’s return signals Ole Miss’s continued trust in his ability to contribute at a high level, even as he approaches the later stages of his collegiate career.
