USA TODAY Sports via Reuters ConnectDemocrats won big in Tuesday’s midterm elections, taking control of both the House and the Senate while flipping several governors’ seats across the country. And Stephen A. Smith, one of the loudest political voices in sports media, didn’t mince words about what it meant for the GOP.In a new episode of his podcast, the ESPN star called the results an “annihilation of epic proportions” for Republicans. While Smith said voters were sending a message to President Donald Trump, he also put plenty of the blame on Republican lawmakers who he said had “no spine whatsoever” when it came to standing up to him.Smith’s Midterm PredictionsSmith had plenty to say about the midterms before a single vote was cast. On an episode of his Straight Shooter podcast released ahead of Election Day, he warned Democrats not to pursue impeachment against Trump if they won back the House. At the time, Smith predicted that Democrats would win the House, but that “Republicans are going to hold on to the Senate.” That didn’t turn out to be the case, as Democrats won control of the Senate as well.Smith admitted after the election that former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who joined him for his live election night show, got that one right. Smith played back the clip of McAuliffe predicting a Democratic sweep and said, “He’s absolutely right.”Smith has also been floated as a possible 2028 presidential candidate himself, and he’s become increasingly outspoken about politics over the past year, calling himself a registered independent.‘An Annihilation of Epic Proportions’Smith opened his post-election episode of Straight Shooter by calling Tuesday a “nightmare” for the Republican Party.“It’s a devastating loss to say the least. It was a beatdown of epic proportions, the likes of which we haven’t seen, at least in the eyes of some publications in a half century,” Smith said, on the podcast.Smith said voters were sending a message to Trump about inflation, affordability, and the war in Iran. But he argued that the results weren’t just about the president.“Because even though he’s the president of the United States of America, he is one man. And there were a number of representatives in the House as well as the United States Senate that the American people emphatically accused of having no spine whatsoever. No willingness to stand up to him, no willingness to help course correct when it came to him and some of his actions that they may have disapproved of,” Smith said.“And they sent an emphatic message to the Republican Party and the GOP. We can’t stand your asses. We want you up out of here,” he continued.Smith later made it clear that he didn’t think there was any need to sugarcoat the results.“So many peop
