Barnett celebrated the touchdown with his teammates, and nothing seemed to be wrong. However, just a few minutes later, tragedy struck as Barnett collapsed on the sideline, suffering from what Fox4 Kansas City’s Harold R. Kuntz reported were “seizure-like symptoms.”The game was suspended and eventually canceled. Barnett was then rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Kansas City Star. William Jewell College confirmed Barnett’s death at 2:31 p.m.“William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett, a junior business administration and member of Jewell Cardinal football program and former Liberty North Eagle,” the school wrote in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.”“Liberty North is deeply saddened by the passing of MicahJo Barnett, a 2024 Eagle grad,” Liberty North athletics’ official account posted on X. “Our hearts are with MicahJo’s family, our Liberty community, William Jewell and all of his friends and loved ones. MicahJo represented the best in all of us and his legacy will be felt forever.”Sports world in mourningThe heartbreaking news of Barnett’s passing quickly made its way to the sports world on Saturday as many took to social media to express their condolences.“Life is short. Seems unfair. Enjoy your friends & family. Celebrate them. Don’t worry about petty BS,” wrote NFL insider John Frascella.“William Jewell in KC is where Dan Lanning got his start. It’s a great program. Look at how much this meant to MicahJo Barnett and the rest of his William Jewell team. It is incomprehensible to believe he would no longer be with us minutes later. Such a heartbreaking story,” wrote sports announcer Chase Snyder.“There is no possible way to keep this in perspective. I can’t imagine the pain and grief his family and team has. Most of us don’t know MicahJo and its still totally heartbreaking.
