Surrey win, Hants reach Finals Day in T20 Blast

Laura Harris played a record-tying inning to help Surrey breeze past Warwickshire Bears and edge closer to the men’s and women’s Vitality Blast semi-finals. She smashed a rapid 81 off 32 balls, following Bryony Smith’s blazing start, as Surrey chased 181 with ease to seal a seven-wicket victory at the Oval. Harris’s effort joined the all-time Women’s T20 record for the fastest half-century, as she reached 50 from just 15 deliveries, matching the mark set by Marie Kelly in 2022 and Fatima Sana in 2026. Smith had already set the pace, reaching 50 off 23 balls in the eighth over to deliver the quickest fifty of the season, but Harris soon eclipsed that effort to push Surrey toward a dominant win.
Surrey’s win keeps them 10 points clear of fifth-placed Somerset with one game left, effectively guaranteeing a place in the last four barring an improbable set of results elsewhere. The result also leaves competition leaders Hampshire Hawks in pole position for Finals Day, which is scheduled for Friday, 17 July, after they defeated The Blaze by 23 runs at the Utilita Bowl. Hampshire, who posted 151-8 in their innings, benefited from a superb bowling performance led by captain Georgia Adams, who claimed 4-16 as they completed the journey to Finals Day for the first time.
Harris’s 50 came in the midst of Surrey’s chase, with Smith’s initial assault providing a strong platform. Smith’s early acceleration—her 50 coming from 23 balls in the eighth over—put Surrey under pressure to keep pace with the required run-rate. Harris then took over, obliterating the Bears’ attack by hitting six fours and four sixes in her 15-ball blitz, bringing up the fifty and shifting momentum decisively in Surrey’s favor. The pair’s partnership of 78 runs in 29 balls piled the damage, as Surrey needed just 56 runs with 11 overs to spare.
Harris eventually fell for 81 off 32 deliveries, with Surrey seven runs shy of victory, holing out to Mary Taylor off Millie Taylor on the boundary. Jemima Spence contributed 20 before Amu Surenkumar’s spectacular diving catch dismissed her, allowing Alice Monaghan to finish the job and secure the winning runs in the 15th over for a bonus point. Yet the night belonged to Harris, who had produced a remarkable performance for Surrey after Warwickshire had posted 180-5 in their innings.
In Warwickshire’s reply, Abbey Freeborn had given their innings a solid start with a half-century, and Charis Pavely finished unbeaten on 45, but Surrey’s bowlers and fielders limited the chase to a manageable target while Harris dominated the chase. Hampshire’s persistence in securing their place at Finals Day was aided by Adams’s 4-16, underscoring their continued supremacy in the competition. The women’s T20 blast continues with fixtures and standings shaping up as the season progresses, with Hampshire’s edge at the top and Surrey pressing for a semi-final berth, while Warwickshire will look to regroup after a narrow defeat.
