Tampa Bay Rays Defeat Mariners 7-2 to Improve MLB’s Best Home Record

The Tampa Bay Rays secured their 55th win of the season by defeating the Seattle Mariners 7-2 in the series opener at Tropicana Field. Here are the essential details from the game. Fresh off the news of his first All-Star selection, Nick Martinez got the start for the Rays and delivered a productive outing, earning his 8th win of the season while handily handling the Mariners in the opener.
The lone hiccup for Martinez came on a solo homer by Cole Young off a changeup. That pitch had been hit at a .137 batting average entering the game, and Young took advantage, driving it out for the homer. Martinez yielded 2 earned runs on 4 hits over 5.1 innings pitched, but the Rays bullpen locked things down the rest of the way. Over the final 3.2 innings, Rays relievers limited Seattle to just 1 hit and issued no walks, preserving the lead and sealing the victory.
The Rays’ offense exploded as they tagged the Mariners with four homers in the contest. Junior Caminero continued his power surge with his 28th home run of the season, on pace to reach the 30-homer mark before the All-Star break, with two games still left to play prior to the break. Caminero wasn’t alone in the long-ball barrage on Friday night, though, as Tampa Bay got multiple players involved early and often.
Richie Palacios started the scoring in the fourth inning with his 3rd home run of the season, setting the tone for the late-inning onslaught. In the fifth, Cedric Mullins slugged his 11th homer of the year and Victor Mesa Jr. added his 5th, further lighting up the scoreboard. Mesa stood out at the plate all night, finishing 3-for-4 with a solo homer, contributing significantly to the Rays’ offensive fireworks. Jonathan Aranda also heated up at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, reinforcing his case for additional recognition and perhaps a postseason consideration alongside Martinez for All-Star honors.
Tampa Bay has been exceptionally strong at home this season and continued to display that dominance with a 34-14 home record after Friday’s win. They sit atop the league as the best home team in baseball and continue to showcase why Tropicana Field is a formidable fortress for the Rays. With the victory, Tampa Bay extended its lead and improved its position in the standings, now holding a 4-game cushion over the New York Yankees as they head into the All-Star break.
Looking ahead, the Rays aim to close out the series with another win before the break. Griffin Jax will start for Tampa Bay against Seattle’s right-hander Logan Gilbert in the second game, with first pitch scheduled for 4:10 PM EST. The Rays will look to keep their momentum rolling, add to their home-dominant résumé, and further solidify their standing as they prepare to pause for the All-Star festivities.
