​Aug. 3—MITCHELL — Champions were crowned and cake was awarded, as the Mitchell Tennis Association hosted the 20th annual Take the Cake tournament over the weekend at Hitchcock Park.In total, 104 participants competed in doubles on Saturday, Aug. 1, and in singles on Sunday, Aug. 2, which broke the event’s previous record of 76 participants in 2008. There were 25 volunteer bakers who baked and supplied 39 cakes and 301 cupcakes to award the winners and participants.In doubles play, the pair of Jacob Dahme and Andy Reynolds defeated Levi Loken and Jager Juracek 8-3 to win the Buttercream division. Lily Goeddel and David Goeddel won the German Chocolate Cake division after beating Ava Prunty and John Cersosimo 8-4.Carissa Dice and Dani Haensel defeated Curtis Wong and Laura Wong 8-6 to win the Strawberry Shortcake division, while Callum Cole and Ryker Jarding beat Boston Bates and Gus Goeddel 8-6 to win the Marble division. Gabbie Thompson and Zoey Zomer were victorious in the Red Velvet Cake division, defeating Alivia Dice and Isabel Chaplin 8-0 in the final.Sydney Love and Mallory Buenzow took first place in the Upside Down Cake division, finishing the round-robin competition with a perfect 3-0 record. Ellie Reindl and Nora Hobbs claimed top honors in the Cookie Cake division, completing round-robin play with a 3-1 record.In singles competition, Jacob Dahme defeated Matthew Mauszycki 8-1 in the final to win the Cheesecake division. Patrick Morgan claimed first-place honors in the Pound Cake division after beating Clay Bathke 8-3. Mallory Buenzow defeated Gabbie Thomspon 8-5 to win the Carrot Cake division, while Ryker Jarding won the Chocolate Cake bracket with an 8-0 win over Callum Cole.Zoey Zomer won the Bundt Cake division with a perfect 4-0 match record, while Greysen Mentele won the Cupcake division and Katie Morgan won the Fruitcake division, both going 4-0 in their respective divisions. Matt Slaba claimed first-place honors in the Coffee Cake division with a 3-1 match record, and Trystian Mentele won the Ice Cream Cake division with a perfect 3-0 record.
