The Houston Rockets Make Strong Free-Agent Signings

By admin — In yahoo — July 3, 2026

As expected, the Houston Rockets have signed Marcus Smart from free agency, reuniting him with head coach Ime Udoka. Smart played for the Celtics under Udoka in the 2021-22 season as Boston’s starting point guard, helping steer the team to the NBA Finals with his defensive hustle, high basketball IQ, and physicality. Those strengths earned him the Defensive Player of the Year award and are precisely why Udoka pursued him to Houston. The previous bond between Smart and Udoka gives the duo optimism about replicating their success in the coming seasons. Udoka’s emphasis on defense helped Smart thrive in Boston, and Houston aims to adopt an even stronger defensive mindset. Smart’s defensive impact, plus his veteran leadership, makes this signing a prudent move that could position the Rockets as a legitimate Western Conference contender.
In addition to Smart, Houston landed Bogdan Bogdanovic on a one-year contract. The single-year deal represents a low-risk, high-upside acquisition for a team in need of improved three-point shooting. While Bogdanovic may not log heavy minutes, he could make a meaningful impact off the bench, averaging around 14 points per game and shooting 38.1% from three. The primary risk is his health status, as injuries hampered him last season, limiting him to 23 games with the Los Angeles Clippers. Given Houston’s injury-riddled playoff run, staying healthy is crucial if they want to contend in the West. If Bogdanovic can stay healthy and contribute 10 to 15 points off the bench, his signing could significantly boost the Rockets’ offense.
Although the Rockets haven’t pulled off a blockbuster move, they are actively addressing the issues that have held them back. Expectations in Houston are high, and management is plugging gaps and making measured progress. While success seems achievable, these moves alone are unlikely to transform the Rockets into a true West contender this coming season. To reach the next level, the team will need further improvements and strategic planning.
